SEPA 3, OLYMPIC-COLONIAL 2
Pitching was the name of the game for SEPA in Monday’s Carpenter Cup opener, and no one was more impressive than Council Rock North’s Peyton Shaw, who did not allow a hit in three shutout innings. The junior right-hander walked one and struck out one in three standout innings to earn the win in a game played on Dick Allen Field in FDR Park.
“SEPA rode the strong pitching performances of Connor McCloskey (Pennsbury), Peyton Shaw (CR North), Reed Courtier (CR South) and closer Will Seiler (CR North),” said New Hope-Solebury coach Tony Vlahovic, who is the head coach of SEPA. “All of our pitchers worked ahead and mixed speeds really well, keeping Olympic off track.
“Defensively, we were flawless with both groups communicating and covering a ton of ground.”
In addition to Shaw, McCloskey started and allowed one hit and one run in two innings, walking a pair and striking out two. He was followed by Shaw, and then Courtier threw three innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out three and walking one. Seiler closed it out with a scoreless ninth to record the save. He allowed one hit and issued one walk.
Olympic-Colonial scored a run in the first, and that 1-0 lead stood until SEPA erupted for three runs in the fourth inning. The rally began with a two-out single by Pennsbury’s Dylan Hirsh, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. That brought designated hitter Chase Ennis to the plate, and Council Rock South senior delivered a single to center that plated Hirsh. Dock Mennonite’s Brayden Kratz followed with a single to left center, and SEPA had runners on the corners. Rock South’s Sam Serpiello delivered an RBI single to right field, and Ennis scored a run that stood as the game-winner when Pennsbury’s James Schaffer singled to center.
Olympic-Colonial plated a run in the seventh, but that’s as close as it would get as SEPA’s pitching shut them down for the final two innings to notch the big win.
“Our offense was led by James Schaffer, who was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and he ran the bases exceptionally well,” Vlahovic said. “Chase Ennis barreled up a timely single and RBI, and Sam Serpiello was also 1-for-3 with an RBI.
“Overall, this group of players demonstrated great energy and approached this game like a ‘team’ which you don’t see in all-star games.”
Vlahovic also had high praise for his assistants – Matt Schram (CR North), Greg Paprocki (CR South), Lou Persichetti (Bristol) and Jarrett Patman (CR North).
“Even though I am head coach on paper, they are excellent coaches and have a great rapport with our players,” Vlahovic said.
