BUCKS-MONT 7, OLYMPIC COLONIAL 3
Will McCausland doesn’t have a whole lot of experience as a closer, but that hardly mattered. The recent Souderton grad proved he’s every bit as comfortable in the closer role as he is as a starter. McCausland retired all six batters he faced in the final two innings to put an exclamation mark on the Bucks-Mont’s win in Wednesday’s Carpenter Cup opener at FDR Park.
“As a starter, you have to pace yourself throughout the entire game,” McCausland said. “When you’re a closer, you can just go in, throw as hard as you want because you don’t have to worry about the next five or six innings.”
McCausland struck out four of the six batters he faced, including all three batters who stepped to the plate in the ninth inning.
“If you want to close a game, that’s how you close a game,” said UD coach Ed Wall, the head coach of the Bucks-Mont squad. “Our pitching was lights out. We started with Robby Porco. We got a bunch of other guys in there between him and Will McCausland, who was absolutely lights out. I couldn’t be more impressed.”
Porco, who notched the win, was outstanding on the mound. The recent Central Bucks South graduate, an imposing figure at 6-8, allowed three hits in three innings. The West Virginia University commit walked one and struck out four, including the side in a 1-2-3 second inning. His teammates responded by putting three runs on the board in their half of the second.
Recent UD grad Nick Harley reached base on an error to lead off the inning, and rising UD senior Jared Levis singled to right field. Luke Gartland’s single to left loaded the bases with none out. It was the first of two hits on the day for the PW rising senior.
“We don’t know anything about the other team, and I guess that’s what makes it fun,” Gartland said. “We’re going against a bunch of silhouettes out there, in a way, and that makes us closer to our team because we all are from the same area, and we have one common goal.
“We can rely on our teammates who have already hit – ask for their input, but also just relying on what we know how to do and trust our instincts and trust the preparation that we’ve done to play in this game.”
Joe Levis, also a rising Upper Dublin senior, drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field, and a third run crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice.
In the top of the third, Olympic Colonial threatened, but Bucks-Mont gunned down a runner at home plate on a relay from right fielder Joe Redmond to Colin Brady at first to catcher Joe Levis for the tag. Redmond is a recent PW grad while Brady is a rising junior at PW.
Olympic Colonial made it a 3-1 game in the fourth inning, benefitting from a bases-loaded walk, but the Bucks-Mont answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Gartland singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw. Joe Levis drew a walk, and Redmond drew a one-out walk to load the bases, setting the stage for a clutch bases-clearing double by Shawn Townsend, a rising Upper Moreland senior. Just like that, the Bucks-Mont led 7-1.
“On the offensive side, the story was timely hitting,” Wall said. “Shawn Townsend had a big bases-clearing double down the left field with three big RBIs., and that opened it up.
“Joe Levis added two RBIs with a big knock, so those two had some really good production on the day. Luke Gartland had two hits, and he was on base every time he was up. That first group did a great job of getting on base, getting over and then getting a hit. They set us up really well.”
Olympic Colonial put two runs on the board in the sixth, but recent CB East grad Tyler Behm pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out a pair and setting the stage for McCausland to close it out.
The Bucks-Mont pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, making life easy for the defense.
“It’s really a pleasure,” Gartland said of playing behind the Bucks-Mont’s pitching staff. “It doesn’t get more comforting knowing these guys are in front of you and you have to make the plays behind them because that’s what expected. We help the out the best we can, but they really do everything that we could ask them to do.”
With Upper Dublin advancing to last week’s state quarterfinals, the players didn’t have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with each other.
“We haven’t practiced at all,” Wall said. “We’re throwing out signs right before we took the field. With the rules, there isn’t too much to do. It’s pretty much – go up there and swing the bat.
“A bunch of them did a really good job at the plate, working some really good at-bats. That was a lot of fun to watch. It’s such an honor to be able to coach these teams because you get a lot of not only great players, but these kids are just fun to be around. I always look forward to it.
As for not practicing together, McCausland – signed to play baseball at St. Joseph’s University – didn’t think it affected his team’s play.
“We’re all good ballplayers,” McCausland said. “Unlike football where you need to practice together, baseball you can step in there a little bit easier and do what you need to do.
“It’s always fun playing against (these guys) and getting to know them and just getting to know their personalities is really fun. Even on the bench, just playing with them is fun.
The Bucks-Mont squad is comprised of players from the SOL but does not include Patriot Division players, who are on the Southeastern PA roster.
“After meeting all the guys at the tryout and finding I made the team, it’s a really cool experience because it’s the best players around,” Gartland said. “It’s such high level baseball, such high level competition, and it’s really a pleasure to be on these kids’ team because they’re really good players, and it’s just enjoyable experience.
“All the tradition of the Carpenter Cup, playing at FDR Park – it’s really an amazing experience. We all respect one another as players, and we’re all rooting for one another because now we can be on the same team. We know the other team is just as talented.”
Bucks-Mont will face Mercer County – a 6-3 winner over Southeastern PA – in Friday’s second round game at 2 p.m. on Ashburn Field at FDR Park. The winner will advance to Sunday’s Carpenter Cup semifinals at Citizens Bank Park.
“The competition is definitely there,” McCausland said. “Obviously, the goal is to win it all. Everyone is – ‘I want to play at Citizens Bank,’ and that’s obviously the goal here, and everyone I’ve seen wants it bad.”

MERCER COUNTY 6, SOUTHEASTERN PA 3
Southeastern PA – comprised of players from the SOL and BAL – fell to Mercer County in Wednesday’s Carpenter Cup opener.
Despite the outcome, SEPA had several standout performances – none more impressive than the three-inning stint on the mound by Radford commit Collin Williams. The recent Council Rock North grad did not allow a hit in three shutout innings to open the game. He walked one and struck out seven in a brilliant outing.
Southeastern PA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Pennsbury rising senior Ryan Zuckerman roped a double to right center, and his teammate, Harvard bound Callan Fang, brought him home with a double to left center.
Mercer County took a lead it would not lose with four runs in the fifth inning, benefitting from three hits and two SEPA miscues. Mercer County added two runs in the bottom of the sixth – both unearned - to go on top 6-1.
Southeastern PA scored a pair in the seventh. Rising Lower Moreland senior Donoto Incollingo was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored when recent Pennsbury grad Reese Hirsch singled to right. Abington grad Matt Worek followed with a booming RBI triple to left center to make it a 6-3 game. That score stood the rest of the way.
Rising Pennsbury Kaydon Faulcon threw two scoreless innings to close out the game. He allowed two hits while walking two and striking out two.
Southeastern PA held an 8-5 edge in hits but was hurt by its four errors that resulted in three unearned runs.
