Carpenter Cup Softball Wrap (6-19-23)

The SOL compiled a 1-2 record in Monday’s opening day of the 2023 Softball Carpenter Cup Classic.

The SOL had just completed its final postgame meeting at Monday’s opening day of the 2023 Carpenter Cup Classic at FDR Park, and in the midst of the farewells and thank yous, Pennsbury rising junior offered an invite to PW coach Mike Perez.

“You guys should come to Pennsbury next year,” Foote said.

Perez was open to the idea of a rematch with a Falcons’ squad that had travelled to PW this spring and earned a 4-0 win. And one fact was clear – although the day did not go the way the SOL had hoped, that did not prevent the players from making positive connections with coaches and players that are usually opponents.

“It was just nice because we don’t know these girls – we’ve only played with them for a day, but softball brings people together,” said Pennsbury rising senior Ava Storlazzi, who was joined on the squad by Presley Foote and Hannah DeFinish. “It just showed how close people can get. I’m friends with all of them now.”

Storlazzi’s perspective was particularly noteworthy since the SOL did not have an especially good day on the diamond. After splitting their first two games, the SOL needed a win over the Philadelphia Catholic League, but that didn’t happen. As a result, the SOL will not return for Wednesday’s playoffs.

“Maybe it was the break – maybe we weren’t focused completely,” Storlazzi said of her team’s loss to the PCL in a contest that saw the team have a two-hour break in the heat before playing its third game.

“Everybody hasn’t been at practice – we just played today,” Storlazzi said. “We practiced three times, but obviously, some people had travel, and it was hard to get everyone together, but when we did practice, we worked on a lot of stuff.”

For Storlazzi, this was the second and last year she will be eligible to compete in the Carpenter Cup.

“I’d totally play again – it’s a lot of fun,” she said.

In game one of the day Monday, SOL ran into a Jersey Shore team that rode the strong arm of rising junior Madilynn Boyce, who did not allow a hit in four shutout innings and struck out nine. The SOL managed four hits and a run off her reliever with rising junior Madison Moran, who was 1-for-3, driving in the SOL’s lone run in the sixth inning.

The SOL’s second game of the day was against a team comprised of players from Philadelphia schools as well as the Catholic Academies. The SOL’s bats came alive in this one as they scored early and often, putting three runs on the board in the first, two more in the second and exploding for seven in the third in the abbreviated five-inning game.

Pennridge rising junior Averi Dockery had a huge game, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hatboro-Horsham rising junior Madison Karpovich was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Storlazzi was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Foote was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Lower Moreland rising junior Laila Murray was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Quakertown rising senior Abbey Wagner was 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.

Wagner also earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits in four shutout innings while striking out six and walking none. Hatboro-Horsham rising sophomore Bella Karpovich struck out two in a shutout inning to close out the game.

The third game against the PCL determined whether the SOL would return for Wednesday’s playoffs, and the script did not go as hoped. The PCL scored a pair of runs in the first and added two more in the third. They took a 4-0 lead into the sixth when they added a run and then tacked on a run in the seventh to go on top 6-0 before the SOL scored a pair in the seventh.

With one out, Abington rising junior Natalie Broskley doubled to left center, and an error with two outs allowed the SOL to score a pair of unearned runs. Quakertown rising senior Mary Wilkinson and Dockery each contributed RBI singles, but it wasn’t enough to erase the six-run deficit.

“We’re disappointed – we’re disappointed that we’re not going to make it to Wednesday,” said Quakertown coach Dave Scott, the head coach of the SOL squad. “We’re disappointed not because we lost but because we like this group. All the girls are good kids.

“We just said to them – ‘We want to be with you guys and enjoy hanging out and coaching you. We’re disappointed we’re not going to be able to do that for another day.’ Unfortunately, some things didn’t quite go our way today, and other teams took advantage of our mistakes.”
