On Feb. 4, 2011, Central Bucks South seniors Cara Armstrong and Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to play soccer at the collegiate level. Ashley Saylor, who also signed a letter of intent, was absent from the photo.
Cara Armstrong – Youngstown State University (Soccer)
Major: Nursing
Final list of colleges: Youngstown State, Marywood University, York College
Reasons for choosing Youngstown State: “I liked the school. When I went there on a visit, I knew I could see myself there. The team had more to offer. It was an opportunity I didn’t want to turn down, and I thought I’d regret it if I did.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “I have known since I was little that I wanted to play in college. When I joined PA Rush, my coach really prepared us and helped us contact coaches. It was really important to stay with that and e-mail coaches for every game and every tournament.
“When it came down to it, making a choice was stressful for me, but the chance to play soccer – it’s worth it.”
Coach Joe Bocklet says: “Cara worked her way on the varsity a little differently. She has been on the varsity two years, and she really is an example of someone who steps up once the opportunity presents itself. She played all over for us, and she ended her career playing sweeper for us.
“She’s very versatile and has great ball control. She has good communication skills and is someone who worked hard on the junior varsity level, and all that hard work paid off. She contributed tremendously to the varsity.”
Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer – East Stroudsburg University (Soccer)
Major: Business/Marketing
Final list of colleges: East Stroudsburg, West Chester, Kutztown
Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg: “When I went there for a visit, I fell in love with the school. I love the campus, the coach, everything. I knew it was for me.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate lacrosse? “Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to play at the higher level, but when it really started coming down to it, I made the decision the summer of my junior year. It’s so exciting. I’m very excited.”
Coach Joe Bocklet says: “Lauren has played forward for us for three years. She works really hard, and most of the goals that she scores are created due to her hustle and pressure on defenders. She’s a fun-loving girl. She loves the game and loves her teammates. She’s very supportive and was a lot of fun to coach.”
Ashley Saylor – West Chester University (Soccer)
Major: Exercise Science
Final list of colleges: West Chester University, University of Delaware
Reasons for choosing West Chester: "I chose West Chester because it was a perfect fit for me academically and has a very strong women's soccer program."
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? "I have worked very hard to be where I am athletically. Since I have grown up playing soccer, I can't imagine not playing in college."
Coach Joe Bocklet says: “Ashley was our team captain the last two years and spent four years on varsity. She has real strong leadership skills. She’s very determined and sacrificed her body all the time. She worked hard and probably was the hardest on herself. She always wanted to be successful and lead us to victory. She just had a great career.”
