Oh My!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Legendary broadcaster Dick Enberg made that saying famous during his illustrious broadcasting career. And if Enberg has been in attendance last night at the Colonial Elementary School gymnasium in Plymouth Meeting, his words would have echoed throughout the building – throughout the night - as Plymouth Whitemarsh opened its 2009-2010 season with a sparkling 82-39 victory over Central Bucks South.
“I told my guys that this was going to be the best team that we play all season,” said Central Bucks South coach Jason Campbell. “They have two great big kids – fast guards – a very deep bench – and experience.
“I’m proud of the way that my guys played,” added Campbell. “Mike Pincus played his (butt) off. If we play that hard every game – we will win most of them.”
The first round victory over the Titans will advance the talented Colonials to the Rock The Rim tournament finals against Neshaminy – 7:30 pm. The Redskins looked good in a 67-54 win over Conestoga to earn a berth in the finals.
CB South will meet Conestoga in the consolation game, which will tap off at 6 pm.
The Titans actually led 5-0 at the outset of the game on a 3-point field goal by Steve Schneider and a pair of free throws by Pincus.
“We got off to the good start, but then their pressure started to get to us,” said Campbell. “We didn’t help our point guard out enough.”
“There are very few games that are won or lost in the first four minutes,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Jim Donofrio. “We had a lot of hyped up energy, and we had to burn that off.
“We are too talented a team not to eventually play with ‘real’ energy,” added Donofrio. “We didn’t want to show any panic, and you can’t coach the game out of fear.”
There was truly no reason to fear as the Colonials decimated the Titans with a run at the close of the period. PW led 12-9 when 6-foot, 10-inch senior C.J. Aiken – who threw down a vicious dunk to give the Colonials their first lead – scored five quick points to stretch the lead.
Aiken scored on an acrobatic drive to the hoop – and after a turnover – fired in a 3-pointer from beyond the arc. Julien Bond and Stephon Baker each drilled home treys – and the Colonials led 23-12 by the close of the period.
Plymouth Whitemarsh turned up the defensive pressure in the second period after South closed to 25-16. The Colonials went on a blistering 23-2 run to blow the game out of the water.
Jaylen Bond – who joined the dunk parade with a tomahawk slam on a breakaway – scored seven points in a row during that run.
“We work very hard on defense in practice,” said Bond who was one of four Colonials in double digits with 12 points. “We want to be as physical as we can on the defensive end of the floor.”
The tenacious PW defense triggered a fast break offense that had 10 players reach the scoring column.
The leading scorer for the Colonials was senior guard Whis Grant who dropped in three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points.
“I really became comfortable shooting the ball in the second half,” said Grant. “I love playing with this team because we all look for the open guy. Nobody is worrying about themselves.”
“I have six terrific guards – and I could really pull three names out of a hat and have a good team,” said Donofrio in reference to Grant, Baker, Julien Bond, Brandon Dixon, Marcus Badger, and Sam Pygatt. “I can’t forget that. I am very fortunate, most teams don’t have that number of quality guards.”
Next for PW is Neshaminy.
“Neshaminy has a terrific young team that believes in itself,” said Donofrio. “This could be a breakout year for their team, and we have to respect them.”
The Redskins had four players reach double figures in the win over Conestoga. Mike McCarry led the Skins with 18, while Ryan Arcidiacono added 15 points. Tyler Katz chipped in with 13 points, and Dwight Williams scored 12 markers.
Neshaminy coach Jerry Devine is ready for the challenge.
“We played really well tonight,” said Devine after the Skins win over Conestoga. “Some people questioned why we kept coming back to this tournament, but you want your kids to play against the best teams.”
Nine ferocious dunks – eight nasty blocked shots – and 25 created turnovers by the highly touted Colonials on the night.
