On Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, Hatboro-Horsham senior Eddie Coombs – surrounded by a large crowd of family and friends - signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse at Marist College.
Eddie Coombs – Marist College (Lacrosse)
Major: Political Science (Pre-law)
Final college list: Marist, Hartford, Albany, Drexel
Reasons for selecting Marist: “Marist had everything I was looking for. It was D-1, but it was a small D-1. It had the class size I was looking for. It has a beautiful campus, and I loved the coaches.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate lacrosse become a reality? “I always wanted to play lacrosse in college. It was just a question of whether I was going to play D-1 or D-3. When the calls started coming in on July 1, I realized I could pursue my goal of becoming a D-1 player.”
How important was your experience playing for the Rebel Elite club squad? “When you play club lacrosse, you’re playing against all-stars from all over the country. Coach Harry Sankey, my Rebels’ coach, took my game to another level. He really helped me mature as a lacrosse player, and he’s the one who really helped me talk to a lot of college coaches and got my name out there.”
Comment about the importance of the many people – players, coaches, and family members - who came to your signing today. “They are the people who inspired me to do well and succeed and know what’s important in life. They’ve supported me through everything. The ups and the downs – they’re always there for me.”
How excited are you for your final high school season? “I’m really looking forward to it. Especially since I missed my senior football season - I really want to make my lacrosse season memorable.”
Coach David Sowers says: “What makes him such a good lacrosse player are the characteristics instilled in him by his parents. We have a term – the heartbeat. I once read from (Duke men’s basketball coach Mike) Krzyzewski that you need to find the heartbeat of the team. Everyone on the team has a role, and that heartbeat will get you going in the right direction. Eddie is our heartbeat. It comes with the work ethic that has been instilled from his parents.
“I expected all of this to happen to him. You work hard – good things will happen. His mother and father and their role and what they have done for him is just tremendous.
“Eddie plays with such tremendous passion. I will never forget the Abington game – Eddie willed us back into that game, and it was his passion that we fed off of. Everybody can talk about his athletic ability, which is phenomenal, but as a coach, I look at the passion he brings to the team and to the game, and that’s what’s fun for me to watch.
“He’s like a son to me. My kids look at him and want to be like Eddie Coombs. That’s something special. I can’t ask for a better role model.”
