On Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, five Council Rock South seniors were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to play soccer at the collegiate level.
“It’s a special group when you have five kids going to D-1 schools,” coach John Oberholtzer said. “In their careers, the team was 69-20-2, and 11 of those losses came their freshman year. Twice they were league champs, they also were semifinalists in the state, and they won districts (in 2010). They’ve had tremendous club careers. They represented Council Rock South fantastically.”
Alexa Crosier – University of Vermont (Soccer)
Major: Secondary Education/History
Reasons for choosing Vermont: “I didn’t really have a final (of schools) because it changed every day. I was looking at schools from basically Vermont to Virginia, but Vermont was my favorite. I’m from New England, and it’s a very New England school – it’s really pretty, and the people are really nice. I love my coach, and the girls were all really nice.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “I always knew I wanted to play soccer in college. That’s been my dream, that’s what I really wanted to do.”
Coach John Oberholtzer says: “Alexa played midfield for us. She was very strong in the air, and she’s a very physical player. She has a big heart.”

Paula Jurewicz – Temple University (Soccer)

Reasons for choosing Temple: “It was closer to home and the campus life, and their business program is top notch.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “When I was a freshman, we started going to showcases for soccer, and having all the coaches come and watch your games was kind of cool. That’s how I knew I wanted to play, and I didn’t want to put in all that hard work for nothing.”
Coach John Oberholtzer says: “Paula played center back. She had an unbelievable throw in, and she was a very tough defender. She actually came out of the back and scored some goals for us. She will be a very strong outside defender for Temple.”

Favorite movie: Billy Madison
Favorite music: Rascal Flatts
Samantha Lawson – Campbell University (Soccer)
Major: Pre-Physician’s Assistant
Final list of colleges: Campbell, Pittsburgh, Bryant
Reasons for choosing Campbell: “It was just a perfect placement. It’s down south, and I’m really more of a southern type person. The team was so close, and it was just a perfect choice.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “In eighth grade, I was on a team with a bunch of good players and we made it to the state finals and state semifinals. When I started seeing the college coaches coming to my games, I thought it would be a great idea.
“The process was so hard. You have to e-mail so many people, and hopefully, the colleges will come to your games. It’s difficult, but it’s all worth it in the end.”
Coach John Oberholtzer says: “She was our keeper. She came up big for us, and she was one of the main reasons we were able to win districts (in 2010), saving some goals. She was outstanding. She was the number one goaltender for us and the number one goaltender for the league.”

Favorite food: Mashed Potatoes
Favorite movie: Elf
Favorite music: Country – Rascal Flatts
Kelsey Pressler – Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) (Soccer)

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “The recruiting started my sophomore year, but it really didn’t get heavy until my junior year. I didn’t make my decision until the summer before my senior year.
“It was a lot of e-mails to coaches and a lot of tournaments. I’m just happy to decide sooner rather than later.”
Coach John Oberholtzer says: “Kelsey played wing halfback and also played wing outside. She was a great team player. She filled in at a lot of positions, and she was always able to fill in the blanks, so to speak.”
