The confusion that is the PIAA District One Quad-A playoffs sifted through another Friday night for Suburban One League teams.
Souderton defeated Chester – 60-55 – to advance to the district semi-final round against Penn Wood. (See full game article.)
Plymouth Whitemarsh handled Penncrest – 39-22 – to advance to the district semi-final round against West Chester Rustin. (See full game summary.)
That was the best news.
Pennsbury lost to West Chester Rustin – 57-45 – but will ‘play back’ against Penncrest in what amounts to a battle for the #5 seed in the district.
Neshaminy also lost – 74-52 – to Penn Wood but will also ‘play back’ against Chester in the battle for the #5 seed in the district.
Got it?
And then there is the ‘play back’ tournament for the #9 seed in the district.
Upper Dublin remained in the hunt with a 74-57 victory over Downingtown West. The Flying Cardinals will meet Coatesville in the next round.
Bensalem also remained in the hunt with a 57-47 victory over Wissahickon. (See complete game story.) The Trojans’ season is now over. Bensalem will travel to Council Rock North in the next round.
Council Rock North also remained in the hunt for #9 with a 62-45 victory over Central Bucks South. The Titan season is now over, while the Indians will host Bensalem in the next round.
Norristown lost to Coatesville – 75-59. The season is now history for the Eagles.
This all amounts to a somewhat perplexing bottom line.
Council Rock North rebounded from its PIAA District One Quad-A quarterfinal loss to Chester to defeat Central Bucks South – 62-45.
“Council Rock North shot the ball very well and made adjustments as the game went on,” said CB South head coach Jason Campbell. “They forced us to get out of our zone, and we had some tough match ups.
“We played very hard and gave a great effort,” added Campbell. “All in all it was a very good season for us.”
Rock North was led in scoring by John Raymon with 15 points, while Arron Goodman scored 13 points and Tim Filer scored in double digits with 12 markers.
The Titans were led in scoring by Nick Joerger with 12 points, while Mike Pincus closed out his fine career at South with eight points.
Bensalem rebounded from its heartbreaking 56-55 setback to Penn Wood with a 57-47 victory over Wissahickon.
“We talked about it after the game, and then just decided we had to move on,” said Bensalem head coach John Mullin. “We couldn’t go on the floor thinking about Wood, we had to worry about a good Wissahickon team.
“Ivan Flores was a force for us offensively,” said Mullin. “And Nick Christian only scored a few points, but was our leader on the floor.”
Flores scored a game-high 22 points for the Owls. Alex Agyedu and Liam Kirgan each scored 10 points for the winners.
Wissahickon – which shot just 6-for-19 from the free throw line – was led by Jordan Reed with 13 points. Jack O’Neill scored in twin digits with 11 points.
Upper Dublin extended its playoff life with a 74-57 victory over Downingtown West.
“We jumped on them early,” said Upper Dublin head coach Josh Adelman. “We seemed to be hitting on all cylinders from the beginning of the game.
“Jamil (Brown) and James (Newman) each played outstanding games,” added Adelman. “It was nice to play a playoff game before our home crowd in our new building. The student section did a great job.”
Brown led the Flying Cardinals with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Newman added 16 points, while John DeCamara scored in double figures with 12 points.
Norristown – the defending PIAA District One Quad-A champions – will not repeat as the Eagles season came to a close with a 75-59 loss to Coatesville.
“We played with them in the first half,” said Norristown head coach Michael Evans as the Eagles trailed by just 34-32 at the half. “But we didn’t play all four quarters, and you can beat a team like Coatesville without playing four quarters.”
Norristown had beaten Coatesville earlier this month – 53-50.
The Eagles were led by Aaron Webb who scored a game-high 21 points. Senior Chris Davis added 15 points, while senior Jahquil Hargrove scored in twin digits with 10 points.
Neshaminy was far more competitive with Penn Wood than the final score would have indicated as the Redskins lost to the Patriots – 74-52.
“We executed our game plan in the first half and we were in the game,” said Neshaminy head coach Jerry Devine as the Skins trailed 30-28 at intermission. “We handled their pressure, and we got good looks at the basket.
“But in the second half, they came at us in waves,” added Devine. “They aren’t one of the highest ranked teams in the state for no reason.”
Ryan Arcidiacono led Neshaminy with 19 points, while Tyler Katz scored 14 markers and Dwight Williams scored 12 points.
Pennsbury had its hands full from the opening tap as the Falcons fell to West Chester Rustin – 57-45.
“They played very well – shot 5-of-10 from the 3-point arc,” said Pennsbury head coach Frank Sciolla. “Rustin is very athletic – one of the best teams in the district.
“We never made them uncomfortable,” added Sciolla. “This is a team that could go pretty far in the playoffs.”
Pennsbury was led in scoring by Zak Kumor with 16 points. Kiernan Bolger added 11 markers for the Falcons.
