North Penn came out of the gate smoking in the first day of the District One Class AAA boys swimming meet, held at La Salle University’s Kirk Pool.
The Knights won both relays held on this day of competition.
Corey Smith, Thanas Kountroubis, Liam Kelly and Brett Else won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.35 and Ryan Yocum, Kelly, Mike Kern and Harrison Friel won the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.07).
Kelly won the 50 freestyle (21.09).
Kern took second in the 200 freestyle (1:42.36) and Else was fifth (1:44.31).
Kountroubis snagged the silver medal in the 200 individual medley (1:53.29) and Smith was fifth (1:56.61).
North Penn leads the team competition with 242 points.
Michael Jensen earned a big win for Upper Dublin in the 200 freestyle. His time of 1:38.85 is a meet record, taking down the old mark of 1:39.40 by Shane Ryan of Haverford.
“I was going out there and trying to have a good swim,” Jensen said. “States is looking pretty good for me. There were a bunch of good 200 free times in other districts so I’ll just go up there and see what happens.
“Our team is looking pretty good. We had a lot of good swims, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow and hoping for a good 100 (freestyle) swim.”
Jensen led off the second place 200 medley relay for Wyatt Amdor, Devon Polak and Alex Flynn (1:37.91).
Amdor was fifth in the 100 butterfly (51.77).
Upper Dublin is second in team scoring with 102 points.
Michael Thomas of Hatboro-Horsham won the 200 individual medley (1:48.50).
“It’s where I want to be,” he said of his time. “I’m still confident with that time. I’m going all out for states in a full taper so we’ll see what I do there.”
Connor Doyle of Pennsbury took third in the 200 individual medley (1:53.71).
Daniel Lawton, Doyle, Collin Hanlon and Travis Venables were fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:38.13).
Wissahickon’s Doug Boehme, Jake Berring, Jeff Beyer andDanny Knoll took third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.49).
Knoll was also second in the 50 freestyle (21.12) while Boehme was third in the 200 freestyle (1:43.73).
Andrew Zhugayevich took fourth in the 50 freestyle for Central Bucks East (21.22).
Council Rock North’s Jake Goroshko, Jack Donnelly, Joseph Segel and Allen Shmurak took fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:37.93).
Souderton’s Cristian Musterait took fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.47).
William Tennent’s 200 freestyle relay of Brennen Bastian,Tom Del Conte, Matt Patrick and Matt Preedy finished fifth (1:27.86).
“I figured we would get at least top eight but automatic is overwhelming,” said Patrick, a senior. “It was a lot better than we thought we’d get. I’m really proud of us.
“Since last year when we made it out, it’s been goal to get back. It’s a tradition and we just had to keep it going. It’s been like 28 or 29 years that Tennent has sent a relay to states.”
In Class AA, Springfield won both relays contested. The foursome of Jake Corcoran, Tyler Chamberlin, Ben Wiley and Wyatt Ford won the200 medley relay (1:40.99) and Ford, Wiley, Corcoran and Danny Giampietro won the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.41).
