Pennridge stole the show at Thursday’s District One girls swimming championships at La Salle University’s Kirk Pool.
The top five swimmers in Class AAA and the winner in Class AA automatically advance to the PIAA meet, slated for March 10-14 at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Other swimmers may receive at-large berths based on statewide time comparisons.
The meet finishes up on Friday.
The Rams started off with a bang, setting a meet record in the 200 medley relay.
The foursome of Anna Beno, Brittany Weiss, Morgan Scott and Hannah Zurnmuhl set a meet record of 1:44.65, crushing the previous standard of 1:46.72 set last year by Haverford.
Scott came back to win the next event, the 200 freestyle, also setting a meet record of 1:49.95. The previous record was 1:50.01 by Tommie Dillione of Council Rock North, set in 2013.
Pennridge junior Hannah Zurmuhl won the 50 freestyle in 23.30, tying the meet record set in 2011 by Shannon Rauth of DowningtownWest.
“We’re having a really good meet,” Zurmuhl said. “We have some really fast freshmen that came in and that really helped and we’ve been practicing really hard all season long for this.
“After that relay, we were all so pumped up so we all swam really well in our individual events. It’s really amazing. We’ve come up so much and it’s been great. We’re so excited for Friday for our individual events and the 400 free relay. We can’t wait.
Weiss was second in the 100 butterfly (55.45).
As the teams head into Friday’s conclusion, Pennridge is in second place in team scoring with 97 points.
North Penn actually leads the team scoring with 197 points. The Maidens are hoping for a three-peat and are well on their way.
Helping their cause was a win in the 200 freestyle relay by Kailyn Evans, Aimee Bauer, Leah Brown and Olivia DiStefano in 1:34.63, eclipsing the meet record of 1:36.30, also by North Penn.
North Penn’s quartet of Megan Zartman, Erin O’Neill, Anna Haggerty and Brown took second in the 200 medley relay (1:47.19).
