DOYLESTOWN – The most dazzling star in a galaxy of stars was Central Bucks South senior Mike Doty.Doty caught 11 passes – each one more spectacular than the next - for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead the North All Stars to a 16-7 victory over the South All Stars in the 34th Annual Bucks County Lions Football Classic.
The Bob Sands Memorial contest was played before a nice crowd at War Memorial Field on the campus of Central Bucks West High School.
“Doty is a stud,” simply said North head coach Steve Devlin, who is the head coach at Archbishop Wood. “It was a real pleasure to get to coach him for the last two weeks.
“Not only is he a great football player, but he is a great kid,” added Devlin. “He always has a smile on his face, and he has a tremendous ability to catch the football.”
“Doty has everything a great receiver has,” agreed Truman coach Van Smith who coached his last high school game, stepping down to spend more time watching sons Van (12) and D’Angelo (8) play the game. “He has great hands and has the ability to get in position to catch the football.
“Coach Devlin did a great job of moving him around in different formations,” continued Smith. “He was just too good for us to handle tonight.”
Doty’s first catch of the night may have been his most incredible of the night as snared a 31-yard pass from quarterback Sean McCartney (Wood) while landing on his back for a first down on the South 14-yard line.That first North drive culminated in a perfect 15-yard TD connection from McCartney to Doty with 7:25 left in the first period. James McFadden (Wood) added the extra point to give the North a 7-0 lead.
“It was great to play with some different quarterbacks,” said Doty who had a stellar career with the Titans catching passes from teammate Tom Johns. “Sean and Brad (Herrmann – Pennridge) are different types of quarterbacks, but I enjoyed playing with both of them.
“It was a lot of fun meeting these players and getting to know them,” added Doty, who will play football next season at Maine University. “It was a great experience.”
The South would score its only points of the game in the second period to forge a 7-7 deadlock.
The highlight of the drive was a gorgeous 55-yard touchdown pass from Matt Della-Croce (Bishop Egan) to tight end Stephen Marck (Pennsbury).
The North regained the lead {9-7} with the help of both its special teams and defense.McCartney rolled out on fourth down and punted the ball 49 yards to the South one-yard line as Doty – who also started at safety on the defensive side of the ball for the North – downed the ball.
On first down, a South ball carrier failed to get out of the end zone as he was smothered by North line backer Matt McMuardo (Central Bucks West) for a safety.
“That was huge play for us,” said Devlin. “Matt has been a great kid to coach, and his leadership was a real plus to the defense.”
The final scoring drive of the game came in third period as the North marched 80 yards on 11 plays for the game clinching score.
A 15-yard bolt by Devon Passman (Central Bucks East) began the drive, and a nifty 24-yard scoring pass from Herrmann to Doty culminated the drive and the scoring for the winners.
“I really haven’t seen too much of Doty before tonight,” said Smith. “And I really don’t think I would want to coach against him again.“It was a real privilege to coach these kids that I have had to prepare for the last four years,” added Smith. “It was a great way to end my coaching career.”
The scholastic playing career also ended for Pennsbury senior Richie Applegate. Applegate took home the MVP plaque for the South.
“You have to give the North credit, they played a great game,” said Applegate. “But win or lose, this was still a great experience to be on the field with all these great players.”
And on this night, Mike Doty was the greatest of great.
