Eagles & Indians Fall in District Duals

Norristown and CR North fell in District Duals on Saturday.

This year’s District One Dual Meet Tournament turned out to be an inter-league battle between the Suburban One League and the Pioneer Athletic Conference.

The championship finals featured No. 1 seed Owen J. Roberts against No. 2 Norristown, and in the consolation finals No. 3 Spring-Ford took on No. 7 Council Rock North.

The SOL lost both contests, with Owen J. defeating the Eagles 35-29, and the Rams beating Rock North 31-24.

Both Norristown and Council Rock North fell behind early and had to battle back.

The Eagles trailed Owen J. 15-0 before 138-pounder Mike Springer defeated a very tough Adam Moser 3-1 on a slick heel pick.

Likewise, North fell back 8-0 before John Dutrow put the Indians on the board with an 11-1 major decision at 132.

In the could’ve-would’ve-should’ve department, both teams might’ve had an opportunity to win.

Norristown’s Larry Gordon injured his ankle in Friday’s match. He tried to go Saturday but didn’t make it through warm-ups before he pulled out. That made a huge difference. For one thing, it forced the Eagles to bump kids up a weight or more.

Shane Springer, for example, who usually wrestles 170 had to drink gallons of water so that he could be eligible to wrestle 195.

He not only made the weight but also decked the Wildcats’ Nick DeAngelo in 51 seconds.

And not only that, the pin was his 128thcareer fall, which set a state record formerly held by Matt Yocco.

Jesse Prante, who usually wrestles 195, moved up to 220 and lost a tough 3-2 decision on an escape in the third period.

Norristown heavyweight Rasheed Lusane was losing 3-1 to Owen J’s Brad Trego in the second period when he rolled Trego to his back for the fall, which brought the Eagles to within three points at 29-26.

However, the Eagles forfeited 106 and Zach Fuentes at 113 had no way to make up the deficit.

“I’m not pleased with the result,” said Norristown coach Mark Harner, who by the way, earned his 100thcoaching victory Friday. “I’m pleased with the effort. The kids battled. There was no quit out there. We fell behind but we were not shell-shocked.”

Council Rock North never really got a streak going like the Eagles did, partly because the Indians kept losing the close matches.

The first one came at 138 where Rock North’s Tyler Kelly escaped in the third period to send the bout into overtime, but then lost on a takedown.

At 182, Brendon Poff gave up a late escape to lose 3-2, and Micah Haynes, who led 2-0 after the first period, was forced into overtime and lost on a takedown.

But despite all the close losses, the Indians were happy with a fourth place finish, considering they entered the tournament seeded seventh.

“Top four in the region?” said Indian coach Tom Vivacqua. “We’re pretty pumped about that. We wrestled great. I would have liked to have taken third, but Spring-Ford was a good team. It was the one team we didn’t match up with. I knew we had to put a good bout in.”

Vivacqua was particularly pleased with 170-pounder Matt O’Neill, who won his bout 4-1.

“He’s wrestled real well,” he said. “He started the year out 0-8. He beat a pretty nice kid today and he’s wrestling with confidence.”

Also Mike Jeronis at 106 has shown strides of improvement as he tech falled Nick Suero, 17-1.

Norristown will take on District Three fourth-place finisher Manheim Central Monday night at home in the first round of states, while Council Rock North will travel to Newville to wrestle District Three third place Big Spring, which beat North 53-19 back on Dec. 10.
