Billy Fleming opened the game with a first pitch homerun on Friday afternoon to give Council Rock South a 1-0 lead over host Marple-Newtown.
Billy Fleming drilled a homerun on the second pitch on Saturday morning – 19 hours later – to give the Golden Hawks a 7-6 lead.
Ryan Downs shut the door in the bottom of the fourteenth inning, and Rock South punched its ticket to a PIAA District One Quad-A semifinal game next Tuesday against Conestoga at Great Valley with the one-run victory. On Friday, the game was suspended with the score deadlocked at 6-6 after 13 innings of play.
“My coaches and I were joking on the bus ride to the game that Billy (Fleming) was going to start this day like he started the game,” said Council Rock South head coach Greg Young. “We have seen him do a lot of special things during his four years here, and there was no surprise when he put it over the fence in left-center field.
“Ryan (Downs) told us before we got on the bus today that he wanted the baseball,” added Young after Downs had thrown two shutout innings the day before. “He would be the very last player that I would be concerned about coming back and pitching with the layoff.
“The players were all very relaxed riding the bus this morning,” continued Young as the Hawks motored one and a half hours to its destination. “And we had a tremendous amount of fun coming back on the bus. It was a long way to play just one inning, but as long as we win we’ll take it.”
