HATFIELD - Wissahickon didn’t know what to expect from Quakertown as the Trojans opened the 2009-2010 Flyers Cup Class A playoffs.
“It got to be a little bit like a circus out there,” said Wissahickon head coach Brendan O’Neill after his Trojans were jettisoned from the playoffs with a 3-2 loss at the Hatfield Ice World. “The game got a little out of hand, but you have to still give Quakertown credit.
“They were bigger than us, more physical than us, but our kids stood up to them and played hard,” added O’Neill. “There were a couple of times in the game that I thought we were going to turn it around and win it.”
One of those times was not the first period.
Quakertown controlled the initial period of play to both out shot the Trojans 5-4 – and outscored Wissy 2-0.
“We came out ready to play,” said Wissahickon senior David Ko. “But they took us a little by surprise with the physical style they played.
“They were definitely stronger than us,” added Ko. “And it took us a while to adjust to that style.”
Quakertown features one of the highest scorers in the area in Zach Gower. And Gower made his presence known with a goal and an assist in that first period.
The first time that Wissahickon appeared to battled its way back into the game came as late into the second period as possible. Zach Weiss scored on a power play goal off an assist from brother Evan at the 0:01 second mark to slice the margin to 2-1.
Quakertown – on Gower’s second goal of the game at the 11:00 mark – pushed the lead to 3-1. But Wissahickon refused to give in and closed the gap to 3-2 on a goal by Ko with an assist from Pat Wilson with 4:42 left in the game.
“I wanted to be on the ice, skating as hard as I could, in that third period,” said Ko. “I knew that this could be my last high school hockey game, and I didn’t want it to end.”
“All of the seniors on this team didn’t want this to be the last game,” said O’Neill. “They played their hardest, but the season is over.”
Ready or not.
Upper Dublin will continue its march through the Flyers Cup Class A tournament, thanks to its 2-1 first round victory over Marple-Newtown.
The game was played at the Hatfield Ice World.
“This is a great thing, not only for our young kids, but our entire program for years to come,” said Upper Dublin head coach Chris Seamens. “We played hard, and we played well.
“(Upper Dublin goal tender) Michael Swiren played a great game,” added Seamens. “It may be one of the best games that he has ever played.”
Upper Dublin took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Berk, but Marple Newtown tied the score.
The game-winning goal came off the stick of Gil Lederhandler – and Swiren kept Marple Newtown off the board for the rest of the game.
Upper Dublin will travel to West Chester next Tuesday to meet the #1 seed – West Chester Henderson. The game will be at the Ice Line with a 7 pm face-off
