Flyers Cup Wrap: Second Round (3-16-10)

Council Rock North 5, Souderton 1

There’s no better penalty killer than a standout goalie, and Council Rock North’s Jessie Goldberg certainly falls into that category.
Rock North – behind the 15-save effort of Goldberg - fought off four penalties in the second period of Tuesday’s Flyers Cup second round game against Souderton, negating a 16-10 Big Red advantage in shots and outscoring Souderton 3-1 in the period on its way to a convincing 5-1 win.
“My goalie is my best player – killing all those penalties, making all those saves,” Rock North coach Eric Tye said of Goldberg, who finished with 28 saves. “He has to be your best penalty killer. I can’t say enough about him.”
Another key to Rock North’s big win was the defensive effort of Brad Chleboski on the dangerous Michael McCarthy, who was limited to one goal.
“The plan going into the game was making sure every time their number 21 (McCarthy) was on the ice, we shadowed him,” Tye said. “We were actually mad he got that one goal because Brad did a great job of shadowing him.”
Rock North outshot Souderton 13-6 in the opening period but managed just one goal by Kyle Weitz – who led the Indians with the hat trick. That came with 1:54 remaining in the period with assists from Scott Titus and Chleboski.
In the second period, A.J. Garboski scored at the 14:22 mark (Max Freeman assist), and when Weitz (Chleboski assist) scored a shorthanded goal at the 9:15 mark of the period, Rock North led 3-0.
McCarthy (Corre Sommers and Kyle Dusellier assists) put Souderton on the scoreboard with a goal at the 8:25 mark, but Weitz made it a 4-1 game in the closing minutes of the period, using an assist from Steven Bullard.
Chleboski scored an empty net goal for the 5-1 final.
“We weren’t very good in the first period,” Tye said. “You could tell we hadn’t played in a week and a half or two weeks.
“The second period we settled down a little bit.”
While Souderton saw its season end, Rock North advanced to Friday night’s quarterfinals where the Indians will face Avon Grove in a 9 p.m. contest at Face-Off Circle.

West Chester Henderson 11, Upper Dublin 1

Upper Dublin saw its season come to an end when the Flying Cardinals fell to top-seeded West Chester Henderson 11-1 at the Ice Rink in West Chester.

Despite the lopsided score, the player of the game for the Flying Cardinals was goalie Michael Swiren, who turned away 55 shots.

“Michael had an unbelievable game,” Upper Dublin coach Chris Seamens said. “The score could have been much, much worse.”

All told, Henderson took 66 shots on goal.

Samuel Etskovitz scored Upper Dublin’s only goal.

“I really think that Henderson is going to win the (Class A) Flyers Cup trophy,” Seamens said. “I would love for them to win it all. Then we could always say that it took the best team to knock us out of the playoffs.”
