FOOTBALL POWER POINTS: 101
Take a deep breath – this is how the PIAA District One football playoffs are determined. There will be 16 Class AAAA schools in the field, while there will be eight Class AAA schools in the playoffs.
Class distinction is by male enrollment – but that is a different story for another time.
Currently there are 23 schools competing in the Suburban One League for football -Springfield is an SOL team that competes in the Bicentennial League as a Class A school for football – again another story for another day.
And all but Upper Moreland and Upper Merion compete as Quad-A schools. The Golden Bears and Vikings compete as Triple-A schools.
Pay attention – there might be a quiz at the end of the article.
In order to qualify for the playoffs, a ‘point system’ is in place. All points are earned only by winning games.
See below:
4A 3A 2A 1A
4A 100 80 60 40
3A 120 100 80 60
2A 140 120 100 80
1A 160 140 120 100
Examples: 4A defeats 2A = 60 points
3A defeats 4A = 120 points
1A defeats 1A = 100 points
Got it? Not yet.
Teams earn bonus points – 10 points for each win that a team you defeat during the season earns – both before and after you play them.
If you lose to a team, you do not receive any bonus points for any wins that team gets during the season.
Got it now? Maybe.
Right now, Souderton has 590 ‘power points’ and is ranked #15 in the district. The Indians have a 4-4 record – here is how the Big Red earned those points.
First of all, Souderton will get NO points in the games that it lost this year – Roman Catholic, Central Bucks West, Hatboro-Horsham, and North Penn.
The Indians will earn a whopping 170 points for its win over Neshaminy – 100 for the win plus 70 bonus points for Neshaminy’s seven wins.
Souderton earned 140 points for its win over Downingtown East – 100 for the win plus 40 bonus points.
The Big Red earned 150 points for its win over Pennridge – 100 for the win plus 50 bonus points.
Souderton earned 130 points for its victory over Central Bucks South – 100 for the win plus 30 bonus points.
Add them up – 170+140+150+130= 590
So you can bet that Souderton will be rooting for Neshaminy, Downingtown East, Pennridge, and Central Bucks South the remainder of the year.
Got it now? Not really.
Once the number of points is calculated. it is divided by the number of games that the team plays. And that average number is what is considered for the final rankings.
Souderton’s 590 ‘power points’ are divided by the number of games the Indians have played – eight – and that average – 73.750 is the crucial number.
Still with me – keep reading.
Souderton has two games left before the playoffs are set. The Indians play at Central Bucks East (4-4 * 570 points * 71.250 * ranked in a 16th place tie) and at Quakertown (6-2 * 790 points * 98.750 * ranked 9th).
“There is no question that these are two games that we can win,” said Souderton head coach Ed Gallagher after the Indians dropped a 33-10 game last week to North Penn. “And if we can take care of business, we should be in the playoffs.”
“We have to play the Souderton game like it’s a playoff game,” said Central Bucks East coach Tim Michael after his Patriots dropped a 27-20 contest to Quakertown last week. “We have no room for error – and even if we win, we’re going to need some help.”
“This was a huge win for us in terms of the playoffs,” said Quakertown coach John Donnelly after the Panther win over CB East. “But we have to step up and meet the challenge in our next two games against CB West and Souderton.”
Take out a pencil and get ready for the quiz – just kidding.
