Taylor Gerstenfield – Bloomsburg University (Soccer)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Bloomsburg, Temple, West Chester, Elizabethtown, East Stroudsburg, Penn State
Reasons for choosing Bloomsburg: “I received a soccer scholarship, and I really liked the campus. I met some of the girls on the team, but it was mostly the scholarship.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “Soccer has always been big in my family – my dad (who is in Drexel’s Hall of Fame), my brother, my grand-pop and my great uncle all played soccer. It’s always been in my life, and I have always wanted to play college soccer. I have been playing soccer since I was four years old. It’s always been a high priority to me. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices for soccer. I went to a lot of showcases and played on good teams. I was so excited for high school soccer, and I’ve always wanted to play in college.”
Former Tennent coach James Barry says: “The first thing that stood out – Taylor was a hard worker and also had a love for the game. Every practice and game, she would bring 100 percent, play with a lot of passion, ask a lot of questions, and that stood out immediately.
“From a coach’s point of view, she was a good versatile player. Any time I had an injury or needed someone to play a different position, I would go to her. She would step up and play any position, and that was her due to her understanding of the game. She was always paying attention at practice, and she not only understood her role but understood the role of everyone else on the team, so to move around the field and play different positions was just kind of natural for her. She always wanted to improve, so I think transition into college ball is just a natural progression.
