Girls' PIAA State Wrap: Class AAA

Paige Whitmire of Souderton won the 50 freestyle in 22.83 at the PIAA Class AAA swimming and diving championships on Friday at Bucknell University.

She went into the final as the top qualifier from the preliminaries.
 
“That did give me some confidence but my coach (Todd Bauer) told me not to get cocky," Whitemire said. "I could see girls around me jumping around and trying to intimidate me but I just didn’t look at them.”
 
She also swam anchor on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Missy Doll, Chloe Thomas and Angela Severn in a state-record time of 1:34.16.
 
“We’ve always wanted to win that relay,” Whitmire said. “We’re so excited that we actually won.”
 
Severn took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.52.
 
“I was next to Mikelle (Maciantonio of Emmaus, the winner) and that was good for me," she said. "I haven’t been pushed all year, and she was great competition.”
 
Doll was tied for sixth in the 50 freestyle with Samantha Wierzbicki of Wilson. Both had aa time of 23.69.
 
Upper Dublin’s Megan Lafferty finished third in the 100 butterfly in 55.21.
 
“I’m happy with how I swam,” Lafferty said. “I think I could have done better.”
 
She was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay, which finished in fifth place in 1:36.67. Carolyn Meier, Erin Regan and Lindsey Schmidt were the other relay members.
 
Melanie Busch of William Tennent took fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.87).
 
Lauren Ahrens of CB South finished 16th in the 200 IM in 2:09.52.
 
Four SOL divers made it to the final round.
 
Julia Tate of North Penn scored 413.50 points to take 6th in diving with Pennsbury’s Emily Howard taking eighth with 400.75 points.
 
Chelsea Adlam and Kelsey Tennett, both from Hatboro-Horsham, finished in 11th and 12th place, respectively. Adlam had 388.40 points and Tennett had 386.60.
 
CB South’s Lindsay Schmidt made it to the semifinals in diving and was 19th overall with 249.30 points.
 
North Penn’s foursome of Sam Deana, Heather Fellmuth, Mary Morris and Nicole Dibonaventura took seventh in 1:37.56 in the 200 freestyle relay.
 
Deana, Casey O’Neill, Jan Ikeda and Fellmuth were also 12th in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.44.
 
In the 200 freestyle, Dibonaventura finished 14th with a time of 1:53.98.
 
Kate Dillione of Council Rock North took 27th in 1:58.12 and Colleen MacMillan of CB West was 30th in 1:58.12 to round out the SOL representatives in the 200 free.
 
In the 50 freestyle, Deana of North Penn made it to the consolation heat, taking 15th (24.36).
 
Also in the 50 free, Thomas of Souderton was 18th in 24.58 and Ali Roth of CB West took 24th in 24.98.
 
In the 100 butterfly, Madeline Barlow of Pennsbury finished in 14th place in 57.75.
 
Erin Regan of Upper Dublin was 17th in the fly 58.09. Regan just missed the final spot in the consolation heat, getting nosed out by Lauren Baisden of West Chester Henderson, who swam a 58.08 in the preliminaries.
 
Also in the butterfly, Ikeda of North Penn took 23rd in 59.24.
 
Souderton is in 3rd place in the team standings with 111.50 points. Upper Dublin is tied for 10th with Conestoga. Both have 44 points.
