NEWTOWN – Question? When does a Golden Hawk look like a Nittany Lion?

Answer: When Council Rock South plays its home games this season dressed in its ‘retro’ blue uniforms with the brilliant white helmets.

Rock South not only looked like Penn State but played like the highly touted Lions in a 31-7 nonleague victory over visiting Central Bucks East.

“I was very pleased with the way that we played tonight,” said Council Rock South head coach Vince Bedesem. “Pleased, but not satisfied. Any time you can leave the field with a win, you have to be pleased.”

Rock South got that winning feeling on its initial series of the game. The Golden Hawks flew 79-yards on 11 plays to score the first touchdown of the game.

“We debated whether to take the ball or defer considering the weather,” said Bedesem as the game was played during a persistent rain. “We finally decided to take the ball, and it was the right decision.”

Junior quarterback Bill Fleming engineered the scoring drive. Fleming ran the ball three times during the drive for 30 yards and capped the drive with a perfectly thrown ball to Andrew Halivand for a 24-yard scoring strike. Rich Bruno added the placement to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.

“Billy keeps getting better and better running the offense,” said Bedesem. “He has to make a lot of reads along the line of scrimmage, and he made some good choices tonight.”

Fleming was so effective, in fact, that he made a terrific fake to the center of the line – kept the ball – and broke outside for an apparent touchdown. However, the referee blew an inadvertent whistle to negate the score.

“That’s part of football,” shrugged Bedesem. “Until I coach a perfect game, and all my players play a perfect game, I can’t complain.”

Council Rock South added a second period touchdown. Braxton Ambrose capped a six-play, 34-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown bolt.

The terrific field position was given to Rock South when linebacker Hunter Shull recovered a fumble. Shull also intercepted a pass and had three quarterback sacks.

“I thought our whole defense played great,” said Shull. “We play as a team and not as individuals. We took a lot of time looking at film, and it paid off.

“A lot of people look at us as a second tier team in this conference,” added Shull in reference to the “Big Three” of Pennsbury, Neshaminy, and Abington. “We have to continue to work hard to show them otherwise.”

The Hawks added a field goal before the end of the half to take a 17-0 lead. The seven-play march culminated with a 25-yard field goal by Bruno.

CR South scored early in the third period to seal the deal. Hawk cornerback Brian Donnelly intercepted a pass to set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Greg Welch.

Rock South made it 31-straight points when Fleming capped a 10-play scoring drive with a five-yard run with 11 minutes, 17 seconds left in the game.

The Patriots put together their only scoring drive in the fourth period. East pieced together a nine-play scoring drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown burst by Justyn White.

White was the lone bright spot on a dismal night for the Patriots. He rushed for a game-high 153 yards on 22 carries.

“White is a dangerous runner – no question,” said Bedesem. “I thought we stung him a few times, but he is good.”

East has gone through a rugged two weeks that has seen losses to both Abington (31-10) and Rock South (31-7).

“We are young – we lost 28 seniors,” said CB East head coach Tim Michael. “We have an athletic team, but we made too many mistakes.

“This is a tough venue for us to do well in,” added Michael. “But we will just chalk it up to gaining experience against a good football team.”
