Highlighting…

Frankie Bythrow, Senior, Setter – Abington High School
About Frankie:
How long have you been playing competitive volleyball? Since ninth grade
Favorite memory competing in volleyball: Going to various tournaments and playing against a wide variety of kids.
What do you enjoy most about the sport? How it is so unlike any other sport.
My role models are: Mr. Lodewick and Miss J-Mart
Music that gets me pumped: Blink 182, Eminem, Jay-Z and more
Favorite TV show: ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘That 70’s Show,’ ‘Jeopardy’
Favorite school subject: Public Speaking
Future plans: Unsure but will be attending Temple University
Vanilla or chocolate: Neither!

Note from the coach:
“Frankie played on Tennent’s club team, and he took on the role of leader and captain for us,” coach Jaeson Han said of his senior captain. “Anything I ask him to do, he will do and then some. He leads the team emotionally on the court.

“Regardless of where the pass is, Frankie can set it nicely to somebody, and we’re getting an attack out of it. At Abington, we haven’t had someone who could control the ball, no matter what. It’s just great to have somebody like that on the team.  He’s a great kid. I have him in class, and he helps me in the class as well, basically being a good example.”

Cody Leatherman, Senior, Outside Hitter – Souderton Area High School

About Cody:
How long have you been playing competitive volleyball? I started playing volleyball my sophomore year. I never really knew about the sport until I started playing it two years ago. I walked on the team knowing it was the sport for me.
Favorite memory competing in volleyball: Last year’s match versus North Penn at their place. They blew us out at home a couple weeks prior, and we came in with energy and swept them 3-0. It was a terrific game and a huge game for me.
What do you enjoy most about the sport? I like that I am playing with a good group of guys. We are one of the most diverse teams out there, and they make my time playing for Souderton very enjoyable. I also like how volleyball is always competitive. I live for that kind of stuff.
My role models are: First off, my parents. Thanks for always pushing me to be the best. Another inspiration of mine would be Chris Klucka!
Music that gets you pumped: Anything I can bob my head to before games. Roots, Eminem, V, Wale
Favorite TV show: ‘Spartacus’ series
Favorite school subject: English, all credit goes to Ms. Goetter
Future plans: College, Traveling
Vanilla or chocolate: Strawberry

Note from the coach:
“Cody is very fiery and very emotional,” coach Brad Garrett said. “He has a different leadership style than everyone else on our team. He’s very vocal, and he gets the guys fired up more than anyone else on the team.

“Last year, he was a backup in a bunch of different positions, but he didn’t get as much time as he would have liked. He was good last year, but we had Luke Pinto, and we had some really good outside hitters, so he was third on the depth chart.

“This year he has really elevated his game from the beginning of the season. We weren’t sure where he would fit in exactly, but it became pretty obvious right away that he was one of our better outside hitters. He’s still inconsistent at times, but with each match we play, he gets more and more consistent. I’m hoping if he continues to improve that between him and Trevor Bishop, they will be able to carry the load on the outside for us.”

Geoff Harris, Senior, Setter – Cheltenham High School

About Geoff:
How long have you been playing competitive volleyball? I’ve been playing competitively for four years and started when I entered high school as a freshman.
Favorite memory playing volleyball: Last season, during my junior year, our team finished 8-12 as opposed to 2-18 like we finished the previous season. It was one of the best years for Cheltenham volleyball, and I’m glad I was part of it.
What do you enjoy most about the sport? The camaraderie with your teammates and the competitive nature of the game
My role models are: My parents
Music that gets me pumped before games: Any type of rap or rock, Basshunter, Justin Bieber, White Panda
Favorite TV show: ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Favorite school subject: Math
Vanilla or chocolate: Chocolate!

Note from the coach:
“As a player, Geoff is great because he doesn’t care if he gets any accolades,” said coach Chris Manser of his senior captain. “He’s really a very altruistic kid, a very selfless kid. He wants to see his teammates do well.

“The other coaches tell me what great hands he has, and he’s all over the floor. He’s been captain for three years and took over the setting with three games left in his freshman year. Geoff took to it and worked at it, and he hasn’t let go – even though that’s probably not the position he should play. He should probably be a libero because he reads the ball very well, but he’s so good at what he does.

“In 12 or 13 years of coaching, I have never had a kid who has the leadership ability that he possesses in terms of how he deals with his teammates – what he says to them and the responsibility he takes on in terms of dealing with them. On the court, he runs the offense. Not that I won’t miss his skill next year because I will, but what’s going to leave the biggest hole is Geoff himself and his leadership ability and dealing with his teammates. The other guys have no idea what they have, and they’ll find out next year.

“You hear coaches say that you’ll get one kid once or twice in your coaching career – to me, with where our volleyball program is, Geoff is that kid. I won’t probably know fully until he’s gone, but you just get the feeling that he does everything, and you get so used to him doing what he does. When he’s gone, it will be strange. He’s a great kid, a good student, and he has a great head on his shoulders.”
