Love in Action Orphanage
Submitted article
Faith and love in action is an orphanage for boys and girls located in Jacmel, Haiti. Jacmel is located on the southeast coast of Haiti approximately 55 miles from Port-au-Prince. Pastor Daniel Alix and his wife Marlaine run the orphanage, which is the home for 81 children and also helps the community through a food distribution program and several churches and schools in the area surrounding Jacmel.
Life for the children at the orphanage has changed dramatically since the earthquake. The children went from living in three separate homes on the compound to living together under tarps and small tents in the open. The buildings are still mostly standing, but the structures were damaged and it is dangerous for them to be inside. They used to spend their days going to school in the morning and taking English classes, sewing classes and playing soccer and basketball in the afternoon. For the last two months they have been doing nothing at all. Finally, last week, they started some schooling in informal, outside groups. Nothing is normal about their lives right now, so any routine is a help.
Pastor Daniel and his wife are working with three schools in the outlying area, trying to pool their resources to reopen them under large tents and tarps. These schools teach about 800 children and the communities have been severely affected by the earthquake. Many of the families have lost everything. They are doing food distribution to these communities, which are located in remote places in the mountains and would not receive any help at all if it were not for Aid International.
