Horrox was sparkling in goal as the Panthers (5-4 SHSHL, 6-5 overall) broke open a 2-2 third period deadlock to defeat North Penn (3-3-2 SHSHL, 4-3-2 overall) by a 5-2 score. The game was played at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center.
“I actually believe that Eric plays at his best when he sees more rubber,” said William Tennent head coach Nick D’Aurizo. “And, as always, he faced a lot of shots again tonight.”
North Penn peppered Horrox with 46 shots, and the Knights fired 42 shots on goal in a 6-1 loss to WT in the first half of the season.
“We have around 90 shots on goal in two games, and we beat him only three times (for goals),” said North Penn head coach Kevin Vaitis. “There in no question that he is the best goalie in the league.
“Horrox seems like he is always in the right position, and he gobbles up every rebound,” added Vaitis. “Plus he is a terrific puck handler and can get them started up the ice.”
After a scoreless first period, William Tennent scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted goal by Clint Aussprung. Later in the period, Aussprung assisted on the second Panther goal scored by Cameron Goodell.
It really looked as if those two goals would be more than enough considering the spectacular play of Horrox in the net. But that assumption would be wrong.
Horrox – who stopped the first 28 NP shots - lost his super powers at the end of the second period and the outset of the third period as the Knights stunned the Panthers with two goals on the next three shots to knot the score at 2-2.
Caleb Witzaney scored the first North Penn goal with an assist from Christian Ahn and Captain Jim McKelvie.
On the first shift on the third period, McKelvie stole a clearing pass from the goalie and fired a bullet through the ‘5’ hole to beat Horrox with the game-tying goal.
“I know what Eric likes to do with the puck because I play with him on a club team,” said McKelvie. “It is so frustrating playing against him because you make good shots on him and he is almost impossible to beat.”
“You often hear that playing with a two-goal lead can be tough,” said D’Aurizo. “And that’s what happened tonight.
“North Penn is a quality squad,” added D’Aurizo. “And for us to beat them twice this year is quite an accomplishment.”
The Panthers scored moments after the McKelvie goal to take the lead for good. AJ Carbone scored what proved to be the game winner on an assist from Tom McMonagle.
“That goal was a huge momentum changer,” said Vaitis. “We battle back to even, and then they come back and take the lead.”
Aussprung – who quietly had a five-point night for the Panthers – scored the final two goals of the game. The first goal was unassisted, while the second goal was a short-handed goal on an assist from Goodell.
“Playing hockey is always a lot of fun,” said Horrox. “But I guess it can be more fun when your team is winning.”
And the William Tennent Panthers have a good chance of winning by having the X-Man on their team.
