Alicia Hughes, Left handed pitcher – Millersville University (softball)
Final list of colleges: Shippensburg, Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, Lynchburg, Millersville
Major: Elementary education
Reasons for choosing Millersville: “I actually visited the school three times. I met the coach and the team, and they were just really nice girls. For me, it was the opportunity to go there and pitch. I’m the only freshman she signed for this coming fall season, and I will have a spot on the roster when I get there in the fall. They have a really good softball program, and they have a great elementary education major.
“I was really nervous at first, and I knew once I signed there was no turning back. The more I thought about it – it was the opportunity of a lifetime for me to be able to say, ‘I’m committed, and I’m going to be able to play softball and live my dream in college. You know what, I just need to go and do it.’ Now I’m really excited.”
When did the idea of playing softball at the collegiate level become a reality? “I never really actually thought that I was going to play softball in college. I always wanted to, and it was a dream of mine, but I never thought it would actually happen because there are so many girls out there who play softball, especially people who pitch. I was hoping it would happen, but I didn’t really know.
“I have been playing softball since I was five, and two years ago, I started playing serious travel ball (for the Northwest Explosion out of Bethlehem). I’m left handed, and people would tell me that’s an advantage and I could play in college. Once my coaches made a video, it was kind of like, ‘Wow, this could really happen.’”
Coach Eric Romig says: “Alicia’s a very complete player. She’s a fantastic pitcher, a fantastic hitter, and she has a tremendous arm. She’s got a variety of pitches she can use and mix up, and usually she’s very good at locating them. She can give a lot of different looks in the same game. She’s very softball smart. Last year she pitched for us and played center field. She’s just an overall great softball player.”
