Tim Filer, Ty Bostain, Nick Donofry and Andrew Stress – all fourth-year players - were honored with their families at center court prior to tip off of Council Rock North’s Senior Night on Tuesday.
Stress admits that emotions were running high prior to the game.
“My parents are here and my sisters came back from college,” he said. “I had my grandparents come – I had a lot of people coming, so I didn’t want to disappoint or anything.”
The North seniors did not let down their friends and family in attendance, finishing up their last regular season home game in rousing fashion by easily taking care of Abington, 65-40.
The back and forth first quarter - which included three ties and seven lead changes - ended with North leading 16-15. All signs pointed to another close battle between the two teams, similar to the one they’d had on Jan. 15 when Abington handed Rock North its last loss.
But the Indians pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Abington 19-6 in the frame. Arron Goodman and Charlie Anastasi were both red-hot, combining for all of the Indians’ second quarter points - scoring 11 and eight respectively.
“We were excited to come out,” Stress said. “Maybe we were a little nervous out of the gate. We came out with a little rocky start but we pulled it out.”
After a slow start, head coach Derek Wright was happy with the way his players collected themselves and pulled away.
“I was really pleased with the way we stayed after it, even though early on Abington made some tough shots,” the Indians’ coach said. “We struggled a bit defensively early, but from the second quarter on I thought we played great. I thought our guys were focused throughout the game.”
The scoring outburst continued until the starters were pulled with 4:18 left in the fourth quarter to a standing ovation.
“It’s the way you want to go out,” Stress said. “I’ve been here four years and I get to share [the win] with the other seniors. It’s another stepping stone, and hopefully we can build off of it and carry some momentum into the playoffs. I’m just happy we came out with a win.”
Goodman led the way for the Indians with 21 points. Anastasi chipped in with 10 points and Stress added nine points.
The other three seniors, who joined Stress in the starting lineup (along with sophomore point guard Aaron Morgan), also contributed, combining for 14 points.
After years of hard work and determination, the seniors have a chance to leave Rock North with a championship, and Wright could not be prouder of them.
“They’re going to be leaving the program better than when they came here, which is what you want when you’re a varsity player,” Wright said. “I’ve been talking to these guys a lot about having ownership in the program, and despite the fact that they’re graduating, they are always going to be a part of it.”
“They’re all great students, great kids, extremely hard workers on the floor, great leaders for our younger guys, and I hope we can keep it going for them.”
The loss dropped Abington (7-5) to the middle of the pack in the SOL National. Wesley Rines netted 15 points for the Ghosts, leading the team. Jeff Rowley added eight points, though none came after the first quarter.
The win marks the ninth in a row for the Indians as they move to 10-3, deadlocked with Neshaminy atop the league standings.
Stress knows that the team will need to keep focus if they want to continue their success the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.
“I know we’re going to stay humble,” Stress said. “We respect everybody we play. We don’t want to take anything for granted because you lose one game [in the playoffs] and you’re done. We want to keep doing what we’re doing and don’t lose focus.”
Wright doesn’t want his team to think too far ahead, as they have one more important game before the “new season” begins.
“We’ve got a big game Friday night against [Council Rock] South, which is our rivalry game, so that’ll be a great test for us,” the Indians’ coach said. “We’ve got to get through that first. And then from there be ready for our new season. Playoffs are a new season but we’ve got to get through Friday first.”
