Ryan Mullen - Penn State University (Lacrosse)
Major: Business
Final list of college: Drexel, UMBC, Sienna, Penn State
Reason for selecting Penn State: “Penn State was always my number one choice. The coaching staff was real nice, and they made the decision really easy. I know a lot of the players who are up there already because a lot of Philadelphia recruits go to Penn State. I’m going to major in business, and I know I’ll get a good education.”
When did the idea of playing lacrosse in college become a reality? “My older brother Jeff played goalie for the (Hatboro) team that won the league. He went D-3, my sister (Jennifer) went D-2, and I learned how hard it was to go D-1 from them.
“I got into lacrosse later than a lot of people. In the beginning, it was mainly a sport to keep in shape for football. That was my favorite sport, but lacrosse was one of those sports that came to me, and now it’s my super, super favorite sport.
“This year I started getting letters from different schools. I got a call from UMBC. I thought Penn State was done recruiting, but they gave me a call. It was an easy choice. It really is a dream come true.
“It’s something really special. Lacrosse is one of the most fun sports I have ever played. It’s competitive, but I still have fun.”
How important was your participation in club lacrosse during the off-season? “I started playing LB3 club lacrosse my junior year. Lacrosse is one of those sports in high school – if your team doesn’t make it to states or do good in the playoffs, you really don’t get that good of a look. To get the recruiting process down, you have to play club lacrosse in the summer because a lot of the college coaches come to the tournaments.  Playing for LB3 really made it happen and taught me how to go through the recruiting process.”
Hatboro coach David Sowers says: “We have always said, ‘Work hard, and good things will happen.’ His parents instill that in all their kids, and it shows. For Ryan to work as hard as he did – everything he’s getting is so well deserved. He’s dedicated himself to lacrosse, and it’s paid off in a Division One scholarship.
“I still remember calling (LB3 coach) Jim Berry and saying, ‘I know it’s late in the game, but can you take a couple of kids onto your travel team?’ He said he’d take them, and Ryan was one of them. Ryan proved us right – he went in there and kept getting better and better every year. What sets him apart is his work ethic, his size, and he’s athletic. You put all of that together – and it’s almost in that order – that makes him the player that he is. I’m so excited to see him play his senior year because we have some unfinished business.”
