Norristown athletic director Chuck Knowles passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. Below is a copy of his obituary.
Charles J. Knowles, age 64, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at his residence in Bensalem after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bremerhaven, Germany, Chuck was a lifelong Bensalem resident. He attended St. Charles Borromeo Grade School, La Salle College High School, La Salle University 1971 (BA Biology) and Temple University 1977 (Master of Education in Science).
He taught Biology and Physical Science at North Catholic High School from 1971-82 and taught Biology and Chemistry at Bishop Egan High School and later Conwell-Egan High School from 1982-2004. Chuck was currently Athletic Director at Norristown Area High School, serving since 2004. He also served as Athletic Director at Conwell-Egan Catholic High School in Fairless Hills from 1993-2004.
He was freshman head football coach, assistant varsity football coach and jayvee baseball coach at North Catholic High School from 1971-75. He was assistant varsity football coach at Bishop Egan High School (1976-84) and head coach from 1985-90. Chuck was head football coach at Morrisville High School from 1991-92 and Conwell Egan High School from 1994-98.
Chuck’s 1986 Bishop Egan team was the Philadelphia Catholic League Northern Division Champion, and his Morrisville teams were Bicentennial League Champions, Independence League Champions (1992) and District One Champions (1992). He was recognized as Football Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Catholic League (twice), the Bicentennial League, the Independence League, the Toyota Football Clinic (three times) and by both the Bucks County Courier Times and Trentonian Newspapers in various years. He was a member of the Pa. State Athletic Directors Association, a Certified Athletic Administrator, former Vice Chairperson (1996-98) and Chairperson (1998-2000) of the Philadelphia Catholic League Board of Directors, a friend of the Triangle Club of Montgomery County and a member of St. Charles Borromeo Council #4279 and St. John Neumann Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
He loved walking his faithful dog, Monk, at the Neshaminy State Park.
Chuck’s long history in Education and Athletics proved to be an example of dedication to the students he taught and coached.
Beloved husband of 38 years of Sandra Knowles (nee Nawrocki), devoted father of Chuck, Mike and Donna Knowles, loving grandfather of David, Klaudia and Jocelyn, also survived by five brothers and six sisters, brothers-in-law: Mark Nawrocki (Mary Jo) of Marlboro, Ma., Joseph Nawrocki and Dr. Doug Ringler both of Kingfield Me.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the Fluehr Funeral Home, 864 Bristol Pike (Route 13), Bensalem, PA 19020, and a viewing Saturday morning from 9:15-10:15 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Bristol Pike and Hulmeville Road, Bensalem, PA 19020, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Rite of Committal Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem.
