Nokes' SOL Baseball Stars of the Week

Check out the first group of Nokes’ Stars of the Week for the week ending April 19. Nokes is a contributing writer to SuburbanOnesSports.com.

I am Dominic Nokes and I was born and raised in north Philadelphia. I will be graduating from Kutztown University on May 18, 2013, with a degree in Sports Management. I am a huge fan of the game of baseball as I am of football, basketball, and hockey as well. With that being said, it is almost a no brainer that my favorite baseball team is the Philadelphia Phillies. I started watching baseball just shortly before the Phils moved out of Veterans Stadium into Citizens Bank Park, and that’s when I really started to take interest in and learn more about the game. I played baseball my sophomore year in high school where I was voted by my coaches “Most Dedicated Player” so indeed know something about the game.

My selection process for this is plain and simple. I’ll reach out to coaches and ask for the name and numbers of their most productive player from the previous week. After I have received the player’s names and their statistics, I will compare and contrast them to all other players within their conference until I believe that I have narrowed it down to the ‘star’ player in each conference. When it comes to the offensive side of the ball, I believe that having a good batting average and driving in runs is beyond HUGE, so that is something that I key in on. When it comes to pitching, a low hit total is good but a lower number of earned runs is even better.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(April 15-April 19)

The National Conference player of the week is none other than Nolan Ryan. Oh, wait a minute I meant to say Ted Williams. Okay, so I admit that it’s Justin Andrews from the Neshaminy Redskins, but looking at his numbers makes it pretty easy to see how you might get the names confused. Andrews pitched a complete game shutout against the Council Rock South Golden Hawks, allowing 0 runs and just one walk while striking out six batters. For an encore presentation, Andrews decided that he can close a game out as well as he did later on in the week against the Pennsbury Falcons when he pitched one inning, allowing no runs or walks and getting all three outs by way of a strikeout.
But he wasn’t done by far.
Andrews not only delivered on the mound, but he decided to show off with a bat in his hand as well. I could break this thing down for you step-by-step and play-by-play, but that still wouldn’t give a complete picture of what he did. Let’s just say that he was a man among boys. I’ll just tell you that he 5-for-12 with two RBI’s, a double, three runs scored, and a stolen base. I almost forgot to mention that one of his hits was a game-winning triple, but I remembered, and I have a feeling that the team who took the loss that day remembers as well.

CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(April 15-April 19)

The Continental Conference star of the week is…leaving them all feeling heartbroken and rejected one batter at a time. Evan Myers of the Pennridge Rams left hitters dazed and confused and made it look pretty easy in his two complete game victories in which he allowed 0 earned runs. On April 15, during a Monday afternoon game, the Souderton Indians were the first team to fall victim to Myers and the filth that he brought with him to the mound. Myers pitched a complete game giving up nine hits, three runs (0 earned), while walking two and striking out three. You have to give the Indians credit for being productive in the top of the first inning when they put three runs up on the board, but none of them were earned, and in the end their best just wasn’t good enough.
After a game like that one, most people would probably say to themselves, “he just had a good game but it’s going to be hard to duplicate his next time out,” but that wasn’t the case as the North Penn Knights would find out. Myers would go on to pitch another complete game, and this one came by way of a shutout. Myers and the Rams defense held the Knights scoreless and his numbers were even better across the boards, allowing only five hits, and one walk while striking out four.

AMERICAN CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(April 15-April 19)

The American Conference player of the week is Evan Bischoff the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials as he got the job done from the plate last week. Pitchers love to make quick work of the competition, and they sometimes do but many who tried against Evan last week were often unsuccessful. Pitchers love to hear the wind whistle as hitters take rips at their pitches and come up missing, but the pitchers who faced Evan often heard the rati-tat-tat of his baseball bat because they simply couldn’t get this guy out. Evan Bischoff went 5-for-6 from the plate with three RBIs coming by way of four singles, one double, and a walk. He also scored one run. Bischoff easily could have been arrested for the way he vandalized and destroyed baseballs, littering them throughout the field. No worries - he was just fine, but something tells me that the pitchers he face had a few issues especially when it came to falling asleep because they couldn’t shake the nightmares that were being provided by Bischoff.
