Nokes' SOL Baseball Stars of the Week (Vol. 2)

Check out the second group of Nokes’ Stars of the Week for the week ending April 26. Nokes is a contributing writer to SuburbanOnesSports.com.

About Dominic:
I am Dominic Nokes and I was born and raised in north Philadelphia. I will be graduating from Kutztown University on May 18, 2013, with a degree in Sports Management. I am a huge fan of the game of baseball as I am of football, basketball, and hockey as well. With that being said, it is almost a no brainer that my favorite baseball team is the Philadelphia Phillies. I started watching baseball just shortly before the Phils moved out of Veterans Stadium into Citizens Bank Park, and that’s when I really started to take interest in and learn more about the game. I played baseball my sophomore year in high school where I was voted by my coaches “Most Dedicated Player” so indeed know something about the game.
My selection process for this is plain and simple. I’ll reach out to coaches and ask for the name and numbers of their most productive player from the previous week. After I have received the player’s names and their statistics, I will compare and contrast them to all other players within their conference until I believe that I have narrowed it down to the ‘star’ player in each conference. When it comes to the offensive side of the ball, I believe that having a good batting average and driving in runs is beyond HUGE, so that is something that I key in on. When it comes to pitching, a low hit total is good but a lower number of earned runs is even better.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(April 20-26)

The National Conference Star of the Week is yet another two-way player who makes pitching and hitting look as easy as taking candy away from a baby. The Pennsbury Falcons’ Brandon Garrett showed off on the mound, at the plate and on the bases. The Flacons played three games last week, and Garrett was the leader for his squad. He did not have to be vocal in doing so because he let his play do the talking. He picked up a win against William Tennent on the mound in a game in which he struck out five batters. At the plate, he went 7-for-11 (with one of those hits being a triple), two RBIs, and three runs scored. He also was picking them up and putting them down on the bases, stealing three bags.

CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(April 20-26)

The Continental Conference Star of the Week made it happen from the plate but was flat out disgusting with filth from the mound. Versus Quakertown, Souderton’s Dan O’Hara went 1-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. In that game, he also pitched in relief, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four in 2.2 innings of work. While facing Hatboro Horsham, he was dominate on the mound and helped his team pull out a win 4-3. O’ Hara pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits, three runs (two earned), and three walks. Anyone with common sense would look at that line and say to themselves “that’s pretty good,” but that’s not the end of the story. When you add in the fact that he had a total of 14 strikeouts in the game, “pretty good” turns into “downright dominate” and downright devastating for batters on the opposing team…I’m sure the Indians would love another outing like this one.

AMERICAN CONFERENCE
NOKES’ STAR OF THE WEEK
(APRIL 20-26)

The American Conference star of the week is…flaming from the mound and cooler than the other side of the pillow from the plate. Charlie Hooker of the Upper Moreland Golden Bears came through for his team on both sides of the ball, and I’m pretty sure that his teammates and coaches love the production. Hooker pitched a complete game against the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials and picked up the win. Hooker also did work from the plate, which was huge as well. Hooker had an astounding batting average of .428 on the week. He also proved to be a run producer, driving in three runs while scoring three runs as well. Along with his work from the mound and plate he also showed off his speed on the bases going 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
