Norristown, Upper Merion resume annual Thanksgiving Day Football Game

The Norristown Area Athletic Department and Upper Merion Area Athletic Department are pleased to jointly announce the resumption of an annual Thanksgiving Day Football game between the two High Schools.

Once a staple on the football calendar for nearly 40 years, from its inception in the 1950’s and through the 1980’s, the last contest played on Thanksgiving took place in 1989.  After a hiatus of more than twenty five years, today the contract will be signed on the site where a majority of those games took place, Roosevelt Field in Norristown.

The fall 2015 edition will be played at Upper Merion Area High School at Viking Stadium on November 26 starting at 10 a.m, in 2016 the game will take place at the new Norristown Area Athletic Complex, located on the campus of Norristown Area High School.

More importantly and impactful, both schools discussed adding a service project to the tradition bringing both schools together in a unified cause.  We all know that Thanksgiving puts a great stress on the local food pantries trying to provide for families during that time of year.  Both school communities and football teams will compete in food drives several weeks leading up to the big game.  Separate from admission, the attendees of the games will also be asked to bring a non-perishable donation.  Following the game, the teams will collect items a take to local food pantries to restock their supplies following the Thanksgiving rush in time for the Winter Holidays.

Both schools are excited about this tradition and the positive impact it will have in our communities.
