Owen Fritz – with a hat trick already to his credit – scored the biggest goal of his North Penn water polo team’s season, finding the net with 2:21 remaining to break a 4-4 tie with a goal that turned out to be the game-winner. The Knights who held a 4-0 lead only to watch Wilson rally to tie the game, setting the stage for Fritz’s game-winner.
With the win, North Penn captured the 2023 Pennsylvania Boys’ Water Polo State Tournament, avenging last year’s loss to Wilson in the state title match.
“It was definitely an up and down year for this group,” NP coach Jason Grubb said. “Lots of ups, lots of downs, but overall, these guys were able to come together for the final match against our archrival Wilson and did an excellent job of clamping down, playing solid defense and being able to take a big lead to hold off Wilson and win the state championship.”
Fritz’s four-goal effort led the Knights, who played in front of a home crowd at Rick Carroll Natatorium.
Upper Dublin finished third with a 9-4 win over Souderton in the consolation match.
