North Penn will face Shaler High School in a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal game on Monday. Check back for a game recap.
(1-2) NORTH PENN vs (7-3) SHALER (at Greene Township Park, 4 p.m.)
North Penn
- 21-4 overall
- 12-2 SOL Continental Conference champion
- District One AAAA runner-up to Council Rock North
- Outscored opponents 27-9 in three district wins before falling to CR North 4-3 in district title game.
How they got here:
- The Knights defeated Pennsbury 2-1 in a state quarterfinal game Thursday. James Witner allowed just four hits while earning the complete game win. Offensively, senior Jared Melone was 2-for-2, and his sacrifice fly drove in the winning run in the sixth inning.
- In Wednesday’s opening round 5-0 win over District 12 runner-up Olney Charter, a trio of Knight hurlers – James Witner, Kellan Williamson and Paul Haynie - combined for the four-hit shutout. Williamson earned the win, allowing one hit in four scoreless innings. Mason Nadeau’s two-run single highlighted a three-run first.
Shaler
- 20-5 overall
- Advanced to District 7 semifinals for the first time since 2003 with a 1-0 win over second-seeded Plum. Senior Jake Potock tossed a three-hit shutout, fanning nine. It is the first time a WPIAL pitcher has shut out Plum since 2013.
- Fell to eventual district champion Central Catholic 6-2 in extra innings in the district semifinals.
- Earned a 6-3 win over Bethel in District 7 third place game.
How they got here:
- In a PIAA Class AAAA opening round game last Monday, Shaler defeated District 7 champion Pittsburgh Central Catholic 3-1. The win avenged three straight losses to Central Catholic this season, including a pair of shutouts during the regular season (1-0, 5-0) and a district semifinal loss (6-2). West Virginia recruit Jake Potok, a 6-5, 230-pound right hander, tossed a three-hitter, fanning 11. He struck out four of the last five batters he faced to close out the game.
- In Thursday’s quarterfinal 8-5 win over District 6 champion State College, Shaler was led offensively by Anthony Venizia (3-for-3, RBI, two runs) and Noah Seelhorst (3-for-4, RBI, run scored). Gavin Cannon earned the win, fanning nine and walking six in five and two thirds innings. Sam Ireland closed it out.
