North Penn softball coach Rick Torresani reached a remarkable milestone when the Knights defeated Central Bucks South 8-1 last Thursday. The win was the 500th of his stellar coaching career.
Rick Torresani has made attaining milestones something of a habit. Just four short years after winning the 400th game of his coaching career, the North Penn coach won number 500 last Thursday with his team’s 8-1 win at Central Bucks South.
“It’s probably one of the nicest nights I’ve had because my family was able to come,” Torresani said. “The parents did so much to make it an event. They brought a banner and balloons. We had pretzels and cupcakes.
“It was just a really nice family thing together. The girls had a great time with it. This group is a special part of it as the other groups have been too. Even the girls at (Bishop) McDevitt. They’re a special part of it as well. It goes way back, and it’s just so enjoyable to have done it.”
Eighty of Torresani’s wins came at McDevitt and 420 at North Penn where he has won 420 games and three PIAA 6A state titles (2021, 2023, 2024) in 25 years at the helm.
No one knows Torresani better than his players, and his three captains share some comments about their coach.
They said:
“As a coach, I believe he is very hard on us because he knows the potential that all of his players have, and he just wants us to get better. He not only pushes us to be the best on the field, but academics are big for him, and he wants everyone to succeed in the classroom as well as in life.
“He cares—and that’s both his greatest strength and, at times, his hardest burden. He cares deeply, maybe too deeply. If you’ve had a rough day at school or something’s weighing on you at home, he senses it immediately. He wants to fix it, to be there, to help. But sometimes, you don’t want to talk. You just want to grab a bat and hit the ball as hard as you can. He sometimes lets you off the hook with that, but he always circles back to see if you are okay.
“If you make a sport or any game only about wins and losses and individual accomplishments, you missed an opportunity. This game teaches you about second chances, picking up a teammate, being a leader, showing up and playing for someone else. Coach created that environment and wants everyone to feel it - he created a family. This family stretches far and wide and over 500 wins.”

“Torresani’s love for the game is spread throughout our team. His passion for the sport is clear through his intensity when he coaches and how he’s constantly pushing our team to be our best. He really motivates us and pushes everyone to reach their full potential.
“He is so dedicated to the sport and our team, and he invests so much time and energy into us and our game. He really does care about everyone on the team, and it shows through his coaching style but also how he wants us to succeed in our academics and in life.
“I believe that Torresani is so successful because of how committed he is to building our team culture and working with us to succeed. He has had such an impact on all the girls he’s coached, and 500 wins just shows how committed he is.”
--Cailin Halfpenny, North Penn junior captain
“Coach Torresani is a great coach, and he is always pushing us to be the best players that we can be on as well as off the field. He knows each player’s strengths and potential, which helps him stand out as a coach. Not only does he know our strengths, but he helps us utilize those strengths to the best of our abilities.
“North Penn softball is recognized as a great team with great accomplishments because of Coach Torresani and his coaching style. He is so successful because of his dedication. He oftentimes puts the team’s needs above his own. Overall, he has helped the program develop to what it is today, and it wouldn’t be the same without him!”
