NP Track Stars Sign Letters of Intent

On Thursday, Feb. 10, North Penn seniors Kayla Charles and Heather Selheimer were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to compete in track at the collegiate level.

North Penn coach Jim Crawford says about Selheimer and Charles: “To have two young ladies (signing) is definitely a thrill for me because this doesn’t happen all the time. Both of the girls are four-year letter winners in winter track and spring track. They both have school records with their names on our record board. They both have medals from league championships, district championships and state championships.
“They’re two of the better female track athletes we have had at North Penn, and we’ve had a lot over the years. Both Heather and Kayla rank up there at the top amongst the best we have ever had.
“They both touched on what has helped them (See comments below), and if you could put it into one word, it would probably be consistency. They come out every day and get the job done. Some days are good, and some days are not so good. Some weeks might be good, and some weeks not so good. It’s tough to keep your nose to the grindstone, but both young ladies have been able to do that. They’ve both been captains and set good examples for our teams.
“We’re going to miss both of them greatly. It seems like they’ve only been with us for a short time, but it’s been four years. I know the other coaches around the league keep saying, ‘Are they back again?’ It depends which side of the coin you’re on. It’s just been an honor to coach both of them, and we’re going to miss both of them greatly.”

Heather Selheimer – George Mason University (Track)
Major:  Bioengineering
Final list of colleges: George Mason, University of Maryland
Reasons for choosing George Mason: “I chose George Mason because of the area it was in. I really liked the school and just the atmosphere of the team and coach. The academics are really good, and they had my major.”
When did you start thinking about competing in track at the collegiate level? “All through elementary school and middle school, I did soccer, and I always thought I would play college (soccer). It wasn’t until ninth or 10th grade that I realized I could run college track and actually do well.”
What will you take with you that you learned at North Penn? “No matter how hard it is or even if you don’t feel like you’re succeeding - as long as you try hard at practice and keep giving your best, you will get to where you want to be.”

When did you start thinking about competing in track at the collegiate level? “In my sophomore and junior years, I realized that I was actually helping out the team and getting all those medals. I realized I could actually do something at the next level.”
What will you take with you that you learned at North Penn? “To keep working at it – even if you have one bad day, the next day might be better.”
