TELFORD -- Two players eclipsed par in the first invitational of the high school golf season.

Both Patrick Sheehan of Central Bucks East and Kevin Anthony of Central Bucks South shaved shots off the par-36 front nine at Indian Valley Country Club in the Pennridge Invitational. Neither of them seemed bothered by the solar eclipse going on above their heads.

But both of them, teeing off in the first group to go off No. 1, burned around the course in relatively easy fashion. Anthony admitted to bogeying two holes while Sheehan played clean golf for the entire nine.

Anthony also did double duty, leading his Titan team to the team title. South totaled 195, just slightly better than Souderton's 199.

Sheehan and Anthony also had something going for them. They both putted extremely well.

"Putting was a good thing," Sheehan said. "I hit most of the fairways and most of my iron shots were close but putting was the big thing."

Anthony had a similar response.

"I was hitting the driver real well," he said. "I hit every fairway and I was putting well.

"I had a three-putt on hole 2 and everything else was a one-putt or two-putt."

Surprisingly, they did not birdie the same holes. Sheehan birdied No. 3 and No. 9 while Anthony had birdies on No. 3, No. 7 and No. 8.

This is the second straight year in which Sheehan has won the Pennridge Invitational. He shot a 36 last year to win by one stroke.

"I've been playing well lately," Sheehan said. "I just want to kind of continue what I've been doing.

"I putted a lot better this year and I didn't make mistakes. I'm just happy I played well."

He did have a bit of misstep during his round. It might have been the closest he came to a bogey all day.

"I kind of flew the green on No. 5; no, it was on 3," he said. "I kind of chunked a chip but I got up and down for par so it didn't hurt but I really wanted to make birdie."

Anthony, with one more birdie than Sheehan, also had the two bogeys.

"I bogeyed No. 2 and I bogeyed No. 9," he said. "I had a lip out (on No. 9)."

In fact, Anthony didn't even see or worry about the eclipse.

"The weather cooperated (today)," he said. "I didn't get to see the eclipse really but it's fine by me."

One person who did see the eclipse was CB South coach Tom Hill. But he doesn't really know about his team members.

"It didn't bother them," he said referring to the eclipse. "They said they didn't look but I had one who said he looked through his driver shaft. I don't know how he did that."

This was also the first win at the Pennridge Invitational for the Titans.

"This was a good event to see where we stand," Hill said. "Our goal was to win against the home team and see how everybody else stands in comparison to everybody else."

Needless to say, he was pleased with the performance of Anthony as well as the rest of the team.

"He's just so solid, so consistent," Hill said of Anthony, "He's our go-to guy. He can carry us along with the other seniors on the team."

It was also a good indication to Hill of where his team stands.

"It's a good preview to see where we stand with the rest of the league," he said. "We have some experience. Our top four are experienced."

If they can all keep up with Anthony, it will be a good season for the Titans. Also for the Titans, Evan Casey shot a 37.

Stephen Butler and James O’Malley both shot a 38 to lead Souderton. Central Bucks West, led by Tommy Walsh’s 38, finished third.

Senior Captain Jason Swartz chipped in with a terrific 39, as did senior Joey Monaghan. Jarrod "Rory" Matz led he way with a stellar 38! Cary Romig & Garrett Breslin rounded out the scoring with a pair of 43s. Pretty impressive stuff considering this was the first varsity match for six of the players. The boys are out of the gate fast and playing very well. They look to keep rolling on Tuesday against Quakertown at LULU CC.
