Pennsbury earned a coveted spot in the PIAA Class AAA State Tournament, thanks to its 1-0 win over Downingtown West in a playback game at Central Bucks West on Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons started the game without sweeper Jess Bulaska, who turned her ankle during warm-ups.
“We adjusted and played a different formation than we normally do in the first half,” coach Brooke Bergmann said. “We didn’t play poorly, but we certainly weren’t into our normal play. It was pretty back and forth in the first half.
“When we got back to our normal setup in the second half with Jess back in the game, we were able to play the way we’re used to playing and really kind of took control of the game.”
The Falcons’ scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half when – after Allie Brady got a touch on Mia Reed’s centering pass – Jenna Allen found the cage for a score that turned out to be the game winner.
“Jenna Allen had a great game all around for us,” Bergmann said. “She made some steals and kept the ball in our offensive end.”
The Falcons’ rookie coach was especially pleased to see her team come back strong after Friday’s heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Central Bucks South.
“Friday was a major disappointment,” Bergmann said. “You’ve got to be concerned how you’re going to play your next game after you have something like that.
“We came out strong and played a very aggressive game the whole time as opposed to the South game where we sat on our heels after we got the (1-0) lead. That’s what made us successful.”
The Falcons will face Radnor on Friday in a game to determine state tournament seeding.
