Pennsbury/CR North Boys' Soccer Wrap

Pennsbury and Council Rock North could have opted for a tie.

But the  two SOL powerhouses apparently weren’t interested in calling it an official game when last Wednesday’s showdown between the two SOL powers was halted four minutes into the second half because of lightning with the two teams deadlocked 1-1.
“They play South tomorrow, so I assumed they would take the tie and prepare for South,” Rock North coach Wendell Beres said of the Falcons’ big showdown with a Council Rock South team that is atop the National Conference standings on Tuesday. “They didn’t want to take the tie. They wanted to play, and my guys wanted to play as well. “
When play resumed on Monday afternoon, Pennsbury – according to Beres – had the better of play on the field, but it was the Indians who had the advantage on the scoreboard, eking out a 2-1 win over the highly-regarded Falcons.
“They had the better of play for the majority of the day today,” Beres said. “But we had the better of play the majority of the day Wednesday, so if you put the two together, it was a pretty evenly matched game.
“Today was a little less emotional because there was nobody there. It was just the two teams playing on a rainy day, and it could have gone either way. It was definitely a big game for us after losing a heartbreaker on Saturday to (Council Rock) South.”
The Indians fell to their neighboring archrival on Saturday night 2-1, but they put themselves back in the hunt for the National Conference’s top spot as a result of Monday’s win over the Falcons.
The win, however, may have been a costly one as Rock North’s Matt Shalita wound up taking a trip to the ER after injuring his shoulder. The extent of the injury was not known.
“I was hoping to get out of it without any injuries, but I don’t think that was the case,” Beres said. “I think we ended up losing a starter.”
Dalton Andrusko banged home the rebound of a goalie save for the game winner with two minutes remaining in regulation.
“Raleigh Damico made about a 30-yard run and took a shot,” Beres said. “Their goalie made a great save, and Dalton scored on the rebound.”
Damico scored Rock North’s first goal on Wednesday, connecting two minutes into the game. The Falcons knotted the score on a Jayson Hyman goal with a minute remaining in the first half, and with the score deadlocked 1-1, the game was halted four minutes into the second half due to lightning, setting the stage for Monday's 36-minute ending.
In a winning effort, Rock North goalie Will Terry turned away six shots.
“Will played phenomenal in goal, both Wednesday night and tonight,” Beres said. “He made two or three key saves that really kept us in the game – they were game-saving saves.”
If it seems as though Beres might be watching the scoreboard to see if the Falcons can knock Rock South from the ranks of the undefeated in National Conference play, guess again.
“We have to take care of business against Bensalem and Neshaminy,” the Indians’ coach said. “We have to worry about ourselves at this point. Wherever the chips fall, they fall.
“It’s way too early to start rooting for one team over another in the division.”
Rock North will travel to Bensalem on Tuesday while the Falcons will travel to Council Rock South.
