FRIVILOUS 76 DROUGHT
Visiting Hatboro-Horsham displays improvement on lanes, but were swept once again by host PW
By Scott Samuel David Weiss (PW Class of 2011)
NORRISTOWN (PA)-When Plymouth Whitemarsh opened their 2011-2012 girls bowling season at Hatboro-Horsham, the Hatters were one frame from expunging a school-worst 58-game losing skid when every Hatter missed their marks in the final frame. In the Tuesday January 3,2012, Suburban One American/Continental Hatboro-Horsham at Plymouth Whitemarsh match (Facenda Whitaker Lanes), the Hatters’ coach described New Year’s resolutions to each of his female bowlers in terms of making marks. Of course, having a complete game without any first-roll gutterballs had been a major resolution, considering that the Hatters opened their 2011-2012 season with eight first-roll gutters in their Monday December 12,2011, match against PW in the opening frame. Once again, the Hatters were swept by an opponent for the 19th consectuve match and 76th game dating back to February 2010, suffering a 4-0 (529-644, 574-683, 510-685= 1,613-2,012) beating against the host Lady Colonials.
During the opening set of this match, the Hatters recorded five first-roll gutters (three from Becca Teichman (frames one, four, and 10), and double gutter on the 10th from Tara Krauth). The Hatters’ anchor Katie McLendon started strong by recording a double on her first two frames, but struggled throughout the next eight frames for 117. Sophomore Nikki Martini and senior anchor Meghan DeSante struck dobles for the Lady Colonials. Hatboro-Horsham recorded four strikes and the Lady Colonials found strikes seven times. DeSante led the Colonials with 140, while Teichmann recorded 123 despite her three first-roll gutters.
Next, the New Year’s resolution of not recording any first-roll gutterballs in a complete game actually occurred in the match’s second set for Hatboro-Horsham. Also, Krauth reached her personal resolution of at least five marks in a single set, recording six marks, including a surprising turkey that she enjoyed during frames five through seven, for a Hatter game and match-best 153. DeSante made sure she made an immediate game two impact for PW by throwing a turkey to begin the second set (she recorded nine + open on the fourth frame). By the way, PW had Clarissa Begnaud switch from the three-hole in the first set to the four-hole(Rachel Jaffe filled in the three spot for PW in the seond and third sets, recording 90 and 120 for a 210 varsity series).
Meanwhile in the third set, PW head coach Jeff Blizzard switched Martini from leadoff to the four-hole, in which senior Nicole Bilodeau entered to leadoff after spending the first 18 games of the 2011-2012 season on Junior Varsity; however, Begnaud had been removed for the remainder of the match. Linzy Messerschmidt of Hatboro-Horsham first-roll guttered on her first two frames, prompting the Hatters’ coach to switch her to Junior Varsity, replacing her with Danielle in the fourth frame (Danielle spent the entire December 12,2011, match leading off for varsity with scores of 74, 90, and 117 for 281 against PW in the season opener). DeSante threw four strikes in the first six frames, consisting of one turkey, one spare, nine + open. Ali Stasak of PW recorded a double in the eighth and ninth frames (Stasak also recorded a double in the second game), en route to her game three score of 136 and a 417 series. Entering the match’s final frame, PW led the Hatters, 576-434. McLendon finished her 112 game with two consecutive strikes and two on her final frame for a 346 series. Last but not least, DeSante, the former PW cheerleader, recorded seven strikes throughout the third set, en route to 200 and a 520 series.
Though five matches in 2011-2012, the Lady Colonials have accomplished a 17-3 games record in the league, which is their best start in the eight years of PW girls bowling. Also, the Lady Colonials came off of a four to zero sweep on Wednesday December 21,2011, at the Earl Bowl against the host North Penn Maidens, which marked the first match in 15 matches that the Lady Colonials have ever swept North Penn in girls bowling. Moreover, the Lady Colonials now ride a 12 game winning streak entering their next match. Plymouth Whitemarsh (17-3 SOA/C; 4-1 match record) will visit the Upper MorelandLady Golden Bears at Thunderbird Willow Grove on Wednesday January 4,2012, at 3:00 PM. Upper Moreland enters the upcoming match atop the leader board in the division with Pennridge. Pennridge is the only opponent to have defeated PW in a match (including games) in 2011-2012.
