2014 DISTRICT III vs. DISTRICT I ALL-STAR MATCH
HUMSKI AND PRICE SHINE FOR DISTRICT ONE
Hatboro-Horsham’s Brad Humski and North Penn’s Alex Price shined in the first competition between District One and District Three Senior All-Stars.
On Tuesday night at Governor Mifflin H.S. in Shillington, eleven D1 wrestlers battled a star-studded D3 line-up. In a postseason exhibition match of seniors that featured four state champions and a runner-up, D3 ran away in the team score, beating D1 33-13. However, for D1, it was their first opportunity to face the powerful South Central Region’s best in an All-Star meet. Traditionally, D3 has wrestled District 11 seniors in the meet. But with D3 looking for better competition in this exhibition match, D1 head coach Pete Vantresca (Boyertown) put together a solid line-up to battle three state champs and a runner-up from D3. D11 hosts several senior all-star matches of its own, thus thinning the talent pool for the match versus D3.
Although, it was a tough task to take down some of Pennsylvania’s best in this one, D1 wrestlers did not back down. Brad Humski (H-H) put D1 on the scoreboard with a solid 6-2 win over Brandywine Heights’ Dan Schmeck at 149 pounds. College weights were used for the match, along with college rules in regards to out of bounds. Humski was the first of two SOL wrestlers to notch victories for D1. Humski used two takedowns - one a beautiful HiC to a double finish, and a reversal to put up six points in the match. He was tough on top, riding Schmeck for most of the match looking to turn Schmeck with legs. The only points he gave up were two escapes.
At 184 pounds, Alex Price (NP) took on a familiar foe in fourth place AAA state place winner Kyle Koser from Northern. Price (2014 5th place) defeated Koser this past weekend in Hershey in the quarterfinals at 182 pounds. This time around, Koser scored a late reversal to take the lead, only to see Price counter and throw Koser straight to his back to secure the pin fall late in the third period.
The only other D1 grappler to win in the dual was 220-pound State Champion Mike Boykin from Coatesville. Boykin was solid from every position, posting a 12-1 major decision over David Wuestner of Lower Dauphin.
State Champions TC Warner (Cumberland Valley) 157-pounds, Tristan Sponseller (AA-Bermudian Springs) 197, and Thomas Haines (4X State Champ-Solanco) heavyweight along with AAA second place finisher Ian Shannon from Carlisle 165 all won their respective bouts. The SOL was also represented by H-H’s Phil Torresani at 133, who wrestled SC Regional Champion Zach Clinghan (Spring-Grove). Clinghan was to much for Torresani and recorded a fall to put D3 up 9-0 after 2014 3rd place finisher at 106 Connor Sheehan (Solanco) defeated Edgar Garcia (Avon Grove) by decision.
