The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) Colonials won the school's first-ever bocce match, defeating their guests from Bishop McDevitt High School, 2-0. The match was much closer than the score indicated and nearly went into overtime. The teams tied the second game of the best-of-three match and neither was awarded a point. It was an all-around team effort from the Colonials.
Captains Sam Matthews and Clara Schatz lead the way for the Colonials in the opening game. Larry McLaughlin hit some huge pressure shots as the team won big in game one. A key shot from Jose Rubio at the end of the second game helped the Colonials secure a tie after trailing the entire game. Two huge points from Lupita Rubio and Lizzie Diviney at the end of the match gave the Colonials the final game and won the match.
Bocce is one of three Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports (IUS) programs supported by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Bureau of Special Education. IUS helps promote inclusion, acceptance and respect by providing opportunities for students with and without all types of disabilities to participate in sports meaningfully and by engaging other students in the school community."
