QUAKERTOWN SCARES THEM ALL AT GHOST TOWN DUALS
By Glenn Kaiser
Abington, PA-Quakertown traveled down Route 309 to Abington High School to take on some Suburban One League foes and others from the Philadelphia area, and the Panthers drove back home big winners. Quakertown, the front-runner to win the SOL Continental, is also considered one of the top teams in all of District One. The Panthers did not let the forecasters down or their fans as they stormed through the field at the Ghost Town Duals, hosted by the Abington Ghosts.
The Panthers opened with Wissahickon, the reigning SOL American champs, in pool action. The Trojans were frightened early and often by a strong Panther squad as Zach Borzio decked Matthew Labroli in just :51 seconds at 106-pounds. Q-town rattled off three straight falls and continued on with nine straight victories, putting Wissahickon away heading into the 170-pound bout.
Wissahickon was able to stop the bleeding, if you will, as Kevin Salmon at 170 notched a 9-1 major decision over the Panthers’ Kaden Roesener to finally get the Trojans on the scoreboard. Dan Keller was the only other Trojan to win as he decked Ralph Martin up at 220-pounds. The feature match in this first round dual was wrestled by Quakertown’s Patrick McCoy and Wissahickon’s Matt Fritz at 145-pounds. Both are top tier grapplers in D1, and the match was a close one, essentially won with a first period takedown by McCoy. McCoy scored a late takedown to make the final score 5-1 as Fritz attempted a desperate headlock near the end of the bout.
McCoy is at full strength this season after suffering an injury last year. With Dominic DeFalco, a 2019 PIAA state qualifier at 138, and McCoy at 145, the Panthers have a solid one-two punch in the middle of their line-up to complement a solid line-up from top to bottom. Quakertown cruised through their pool in this 12-team dual event, going 4-0 on their way to the finals, and a tussle with Pennsbury, the other pool winner. Quakertown shut out Northeast High 81-0, spooked out Upper Darby 62-12 and buried Marple-Newtown 75-3.

Pennsbury on the other side of the bracket was impressive as well. The Falcons opened with a 57-12 thrashing of Kennent 57-12, clobbered Penncrest 61-15 and pulled a Houdini on Abington 35-31 with some late heroics. The Abington Ghosts threw everything they had against the Falcons but came up short on the short end of this tilt. Pennsbury’s Zach Mongiello was able to snatch a 12-5 win over the Ghosts’ Jake Werner at 106-pounds in between an Abington fall and two bonus point wins, setting up the final bout down 31-29. The Ghosts’ were forced to use reserve Emmanuel Arthur against the Falcons’ Mason Grodzki at 126-pounds, with Abington starter Colin Hamsher out of the line-up due to concussion protocols from an injury suffered in an earlier match. Grodzki wasted no time eliminating the Ghosts, as he posted a :19 second fall to advance to the finals.
Pennsbury was no threat to the Panthers in the championship match, as they continued to keep all they saw in the fog. Quakertown used all their signature pinning combinations in this battle to capture the Ghost Town Dual title with a 55-13 victory. The Panthers notched seven falls in the 14 contested bouts and won all but three bouts.
Abington showed its depth and team talent as well, posting a 4-1 record on the day and improving to 8-1 overall in dual meet action. The Ghosts, coming off a Cedar Crest Duals championship last Saturday, look to be the team to beat in the SOL American. They are wrestling very well in the early point of the season with a solid line-up that features Shane Rose, Shane Kibler and Colin Hamsher down low, Nicholas Castorina and a rugged group of big men. The Ghosts cruised through their bracketed pool with wins over Penncrest 63-16, Haverford 63-12 and Kennett 61-17 before dropping their first loss of the season to Pennsbury.
