On Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, Quakertown senior Brandon Kulp was recognized at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play baseball at Lehigh University.

Final list of colleges: Lehigh, Delaware, University of Pennsylvania
Reasons for choosing Lehigh: “I really liked the whole atmosphere of the campus, and I knew I could get a really good education there for engineering or physics. I loved their baseball coach and their whole program and how they set it up. I really liked how their coach tries to get you in a summer league for more development and to work on your mechanics so you stay in the groove.
“They said they’re going to get me in (in relief), and if I prove myself, I can continue to advance myself in the lineup. They know I want to be a starter.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate baseball? “From when I was a kid, I always wanted to be a major league player, but I knew I had to get to college first. Probably in middle school or my freshman year, I started to realize I had a chance to play at the collegiate level, and I needed to work hard.
“I constantly work on my mechanics and small drills to make sure I stay strong. Along with the school practices we have, I’ll work at the baseball academy all winter Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. On my off days, I’m working out trying to get bigger and stronger. I’m constantly working to be the best that I can be because I know I want to get to the next level and, after that I definitely want to try to make it to the major leagues.”
Coach Steve Cherrybon says: “Brandon has always had the arm and the stuff, and it’s just a matter of being more consistent with it. He’s young for his grade, and he’s just maturing into a very strong body, and he has a ton of potential. I think he will do well (at Lehigh). They’re going to slide him into a role based on what they have coming back, and he’ll get a chance to play up there right away.
“He works at the game 12 months of the year, and it pays off. He’s gotten private instruction over the years, and he’s made himself into the pitcher he is and (developed) the skills he has with his work.”
