WARWICK – The game came down to a frenetic final power play opportunity by Central Bucks South in a Suburban High School Hockey League against Neshaminy at The Rink.

The game was knotted at 4-4, and the Titans fired shot after shot at Skin goaltender Connor McWilliams. McWilliams – who came up with 31 saves over the course of the game – ‘stood on his head’ with four impressive saves in that final power play chance.

“Their goaltender was phenomenal,” said Central Bucks South coach Tom Coyne. “He was the difference in the game.”

Not to be outdone, South goalie Matt McGarvey came up with a spectacular save of his own with just ten seconds left in the contest. Neshmainy’s James Rambo broke free on a breakaway, but McGarvey turned the shorthanded effort away to preserve the 4-4 tie.

“Matt kept us from losing that game,” said Coyne. “Both goaltenders had tough chances and made nice saves.”

Central Bucks South (5-5-2, 12) appeared to have the game well in hand, jetting to a 4-1 lead – and a 4-2 second period lead on the Redskins (2-5-4, 8). The Titans put tremendous pressure on the Neshaminy defense and outshot the Skins 27-10 after the initial two periods.

“We have to learn how to play with a lead,” said standout CB South defenseman Devon Dunbore. “Neshaminy has a good team, but we have to beat these teams if we want to compete for a Flyers Cup championship.”

The Titans scored at the 3:16 mark to take the lead. Kevin Carter found the back of the net on assists from both Dan Pulse and Nick Gibson.

South extended its lead to 2-0 at the 2:23 mark on a goal by Jake Nicastro. The Nicastro goal was assisted by Vince Vona.

Neshaminy scored an important goal late in the period as Shane Thomas scored with 1:45 left on assists from both Rambo and Michael Caputo.

The second period – much like the first period – was dominated by the Titans. CB South outshot the Skins 17-5 and outscored them 2-1 to snatch a 4-2 lead.

The goal scorers for the Titans were Pulse – on an assist from Carter – and Dunbore – on an assist from Tom Dougherty.

The lone goal of the second period for Neshaminy came on a goal by Caputo on an assist from Rambo and Jordan Ducko.

“We were very short handed tonight,” said Neshaminy head coach Ray Sherno. “Between injuries, sickness, and college visits we could only dress one regular defenseman.

“We only had eight skaters dress for the game,” added Sherno. “The kids played smart, and we played a different style than we usually play.”

The Redskin short bench actually outplayed the long bench of the Titans in the third period. Neshaminy outscored South 2-0 in the final period – and outshot the Titans 9-8.

Rambo scored a goal at the 9:55 mark on assists from both Caputo and Thomas, and Caputo scored what proved to be the game-tying goal with 8:02 remaining in the game.

“We played well together all night,” said Caputo who finished with a pair of goals and an assist. “Last year we beat them in the Flyers Cup, and we wanted to show that we could play with them again this year.

“We were short handed tonight, but we know that this is a team sport,” added Caputo. “We had to step up and play as a team.”

Both teams came to The Rink with the idea of winning. Both teams went home without that victory.

“I guess it’s better than a loss,” said Neshaminy goalie Connor McWilliams. “But we came away with a point.”

“We came here to win,” said coach Coyne. “This as a game that we should have won.”
