Redskins Earn Share of Conference Crown

Neshaminy will now wear the Suburban One League National Conference crown as the Redskins conquered defending conference champion Pennsbury – 35-14.

Neshaminy (9-1, 6-1) will share the crown with both Council Rock South (9-1, 6-1) and Abington (8-2, 6-1). On Friday night, CR South edged rival CR North (1-9, 1-6) - 27-25, while Abington shut out William Tennent (4-6, 2-5) – 28-0.

“We struggled some at the beginning of the season with some life issues, but I felt that we could make a run at it,” said Neshaminy head coach Mark Schmidt. “I am so proud of both the players and this coaching staff. We started four sophomores and a freshman, but we rallied around each other and played well at the end of the year.

“The biggest thing we learned after the loss to (Council Rock) South was to play with composure,” added Schmidt. “We played with composure early in the game tonight.”

Neshaminy opened with a flawless first period and scored on each possession to assume a commanding 28-0 lead. The Redskins looked like it was well on its way to a surprising ‘mercy-rule’ victory.

Neshaminy scored on its very first offensive snap of the game when senior running back Anthony Woodroffe ripped through the heart of the Pennsbury defense for a 70-yard touchdown run.

“We just executed the play, and I just ran to the end zone,” understated Woodroffe who rushed for a game-high 130 yards on just eight carries. “To beat Pennsbury as a senior is a very special thing.”

The Skins scored their second touchdown when Sean Ulmer bulled in for a three-yard touchdown run. Ulmer would join Woodroffe in the century club with an even 100 yards on 12 carries.

“Last year we remember being shocked and upset with the loss to Pennsbury,” said Ulmer. “I just really went out there and tried not to do anything stupid.”

The third Neshaminy possession also resulted in an Ulmer touchdown – this one a 10-yard dash with 2:08 left in the quarter.

The fourth Redskins possession of the period ended like the first three as Woodroffe jetted for a 32-yard touchdown run.

The apparent rout was stopped cold by a determined Pennsbury team that more than held its own for the remainder of the game.

“We came out after that first period and showed that we could battle back,” said Pennsbury head coach Galen Snyder. “This has been a tough year, but not a negative year. Our seniors did a great job.

“Brandon Pepper is a real top notch football player,” added Snyder of his senior quarterback who rushed for a team-high 123 yards. “We are not where we want to be at the end of the season, but we had some positive things happen.”

Pennsbury dominated the third period as it took the second half kickoff and powered 75 yards on 14 plays for its first score. Shawn Pepper – who added 68 yards on 14 carries – capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

Neshaminy scored its final touchdown of the game in the fourth period to take a 35-6 lead. Senior quarterback Charlie Marterella found the end zone on a seven-yard run.

Pennsbury would score on its final drive of the season. Brandon Pepper not only scored a TD on a one-yard run, but also added the two-point conversion to make the score final at 35-14.

“It was a nice win, but we have to play more than one-and-a half quarters,” said Schmidt. “It feels good, though, to be champions.”
