Redskins & Indians All Tied Up

By Scott Huff

NEWTOWN – Somewhere over the rainbow …

It is said that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And for both Neshaminy (10-2) and host Council Rock North (10-2) the pot of gold is a Suburban One National Conference championship.

After an hour-and-seven minute rain/lightning delay, both the Redskins and Indians returned to the field and to a magnificent rainbow that stretched majestically from center field to right field.

The teams also returned to the top of the seventh inning with Council Rock leading 13-12 and one out. Neshaminy, though, had runners on second and third.

Both of the runners would score – on the sixth Rock error – and Neshaminy would carry a 14-13 lead into the last of the seventh frame.

Council Rock would score a tying run in the last of the seventh inning – aided by the sixth Neshaminy error of the game – and the game went into extra innings.

Neither team would score in the eighth inning, and after an umpire/coaches conference it was decided that a ninth inning could not be completed due to the impending darkness.

The game will be suspended and played to a conclusion next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

It could be the title game if Council Rock North can beat Council Rock South on Monday, and if Neshaminy can beat Pennsbury on Monday. Or, if Rock North loses to Rock South and Pennsbury upsets Neshaminy.

Whew!

“When I was sitting in the bus during the delay, I was wondering if we were going to come back finish the game,” said Neshaminy head coach Dennis Cox. “If we don’t finish the game – we lose. And that would have been a very tough way to lose.

“Neither team looked very good in the field,” understated Cox. “There wasn’t a routine play in the game.

“But you have to give both teams credit for battling back,” continued Cox. “Both the good hitting and the poor fielding seemed to snowball.”

The Redskins showcased a pair of mammoth homeruns off the bats of Rick Brebner and John Burns.

“This is what high school baseball can be,” said Council Rock North head coach Dan Kusters. “You put your best athletes on the field to make plays for you, and sometimes they just can’t make them.

“We’ll have to wait until next week, and see what happens,” added Kusters.

And after four and one-half long hours yesterday, that pot of gold is still at the end of the rainbow.

Someone will have to collect that SOL National Conference championship on Tuesday.
