LANGHORNE – The public address announcer from the Neshaminy press box kept the fans updated numerous times on the progress of the North Penn – Council Rock South game.

After all, the Redskins – who were easily handling visiting West Chester Rustin - were going to meet the winner of that game in the PIAA District One Quad-A finals next week.

But neither the Neshaminy head coach – nor two of its key players – semed to know that North Penn had beaten Rock South – 28-14. The undivided focus was on beating Rustin.

“I really didn’t take notice of what was going on in that game,” said Neshaminy head coach Mark Schmidt after the Skins routed Rustin 33-7. “We needed to go out and play football. And I thought that we did a very good job of handling both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“I knew that North Penn could make it through their side of the bracket,” added Schmidt. “I just wanted to make sure that we got through. It’s not easy.”

To be honest, Neshaminy (12-1) did make it look rather easy against the Ches-Mont League American Division champions Golden Knights (11-2).

West Chester Rustin came into the game with a potent offense that featured a passing combination of Andrew Fithia to Anthony Nash – and a running attack that showcased Frank O’Donnell.

But the swarming Neshaminy defense – spearheaded by dominant defensive tackle Ryan Katona, agile linebacker Corey Majors, and swift safety Dwight Williams – took the heart and soul out of the Golden Knight offense with a magnificent defensive effort.

“The coaches really got us ready to play them,” said Majors who punished Rustin running backs all night. “All we had to do was read keys and we were in position to make plays.”

“Our goal was to lock Nash down,” said Williams who teamed with Bobby Marterella to shadow the dangerous Nash. “Bobby played a great game to shut him down.”

“Our defensive coaching staff came up with a great game plan,” said Schmidt. “Neil (French), Jay (Weidenbaugh), Dave (Ferrara) and Jon (Craig) had them ready to go. They deserve a lot of the credit.”

Neshaminy got on the scoreboard in the first period to take a lead it would never relinquish.

The Skins moved 56 yards on 12 plays for the touchdown. Majors – who rushed for 34 yards – crashed in from the one-yard line. Place kicker Manuel Guiterrez kicked the first of his three successful extra points to give Neshaminy a 7-0 lead.

Neshaminy scored on its next possession to extend the lead to 14-0. Majors capped an eight-play drive with his second touchdown – a two-yard burst.

The Redskins would score on their initial drive of the third period to take a 21-0 lead.

Neshaminy moved the ball 74 yards on 10 plays for the score. Senior quarterback Charlie Marterella threw a 14-yard scoring dart to Williams on third-and-12.

A seven-play scoring drive in the fourth period – highlighted by a 59-yard Marterella pass completion to Sean Ulmer – was capped by a third Majors touchdown run – this one from three yards out.

The final Redskin touchdown was the most spectacular. Senior running back Anthony Woodroffe pin-balled out of a pile of white (Rustin) shirts to jet 55 yards for the touchdown.

Woodroffe - who would go over the 1000-yard mark for the season during the game - led all rushers with 163 yards.

West Chester Rustin scored its only touchdown of the game against the Neshaminy’s second team defense. Fithia floated a 59-yard scoring pass to Nash to account for the Golden Knights only score.

Next up for the Skins – North Penn (12-1).

“I’m really excited about getting the chance to play them,” said Williams who – like Majors – excels on offense, defense, and special teams.  “They are a hard-nosed team – just like us.”

“We played them in the past, and we have had some tough losses,” said Majors. “I’m excited to get another chance.”

Did either Majors or Williams hear the updates on the North Penn-CR South game?

Both had the same answer – no.

Extra Points --- The PIAA District One Quad-A Finals between Neshaminy and North Penn will be played at a neutral site … In 2009, North Penn defeated Neshaminy 35-22 in a playoff game played at Souderton; in 2008, North Penn whitewashed Neshaminy 28-0 in a playoff game at William Tennent; and in 2007, Neshaminy blasted North Penn 35-0 at Heartbreak Ridge in a playoff game.
