Game One: Wednesday, July 22, 2009

BOYERTOWN 10, HATFIELD 6

Boyertown avenged its opening round 13-3 loss to Hatfield with a 10-6 win in a loser’s bracket contest on Wednesday.

Ethan Moser – who accounted for all of his team’s runs in the opening round loss with a three-run homer – had a pair of early home runs, propelling the Bears to a 5-0 lead. Moser, who has four home runs in the tournament, followed his three-run shot in the first inning with a two-run blast in the third, and by the time the third inning was over, the Bears led 6-0, and Hatfield coach Matt Gallagher had gone to his bullpen, calling on ace Eric Ruth – who fanned 17 in Hatfield’s opening round win over the Bears.

Ruth collected the final out in the third, and Hatfield responded by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, sparked by four consecutive singles by Robbie Zinsmeister, Chris Edgar, Scott Christy (RBI) and Matt Albaugh (RBI).

The Bears got those two runs back in the fourth when Steve Price, who bats out of the eight hole, delivered a clutch two-out, two run single up the middle to put the Bears on top 8-2.

Hatfield came roaring back in the bottom of the frame. Ruth, Kevin Fink, Jake Dunn (RBI), Edgar (RBI) and Christy (RBI) each collected singles, and just like that, it was an 8-5 game.

But not for long.

The Bears plated a pair of unearned runs in the fifth when Travis Kreitz collected a two-out, two-run double in the fifth, giving Boyertown a 10-5 cushion.

Scott Christy’s solo blast to lead off the seventh made it a 10-6 game, but Hatfield never threatened the rest of the way as Boyertown received standout relief efforts from Taras Letnaunchyn, who earned the win, and Bryer Eshbach.

Ruth fanned 11 in six and a third innings of work.

Game 2: Wednesday, July 22, 2009-07-22

NOR-GWYN 15, NAZARETH 9

Nor-Gwyn exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 15-9 win that not only eliminated Nazareth but ensured the Hawks a berth in the upcoming state tournament.

The seven-run explosion began when Pat Carbone collected a two-out single. Mike Antoni drew a walk, and Alex Bashore delivered an RBI single. Justin Davey’s RBI single put the Hawks on top 3-1.

Ryan King was hit by a pitch, and Craig Lepre, who had a team-high three hits, delivered a two-run single. Chris Greenwood’s RBI double made it a 7-1 game, and when Steve Dale collected an RBI single, the Hawks led 8-1.

The Hawks opened up a 13-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but Nazareth answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to make it a 13-8 game. Nazareth would get no closer as Nor-Gwyn – which received a two-run home run from Greenwood in the eighth - held on for the big win.

Game Three: Wednesday, July 22, 2009
BOYERTOWN 8, NOR-GWYN 2
Boyertown’s Bryer Eshbach and Aaron Wilkins combined to allow just eight hits and two runs as the Bears forced a winner-take-all championship game, thanks to their 8-2 win over the Hawks on Wednesday night.
Travis Krietz sparked the offense, with a perfect four-for-four day at the plate, which included a double.
The Bears scored all the runs they would need in the fourth. Ryan Schwager was safe on an error to open the inning, and one out later, he scored when Ethan Moser grounded a single to left. Kreitz doubled to right, and then it was Ryan Zakszeski delivering a two-run double down the left field line. Josh Schnell’s RBI single gave the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Kreitz doubled with one out in the sixth, and he scored on Zakszeski’s single to left, putting the Bears on top 5-0 before Nor-Gwyn’s Chris Greenwood lofted a two-run home run over the right field fence to make it a 5-2 game.
That’s as close as the Hawks would get. The Bears added a pair of runs in the seventh and then added an insurance run in the ninth.
Mark Grassie absorbed the loss in a rare start for the Hawks, who will face Boyertown on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the title game.
