Game Three: Monday, July 20, 2009

NOR-GWYN 9, HATFIELD 4

Propelled by the strong effort on the mound of Chris Greenwood, Nor-Gwyn upset Hatfield 9-4 in the winner’s bracket final on Monday. Hatfield managed just one unearned run off Greenwood until the ninth inning when – as the result of a two-out rally – it tacked on three more runs.

Greenwood fanned eight and walked four – issuing only one free pass after the second inning. He was relieved by Pat Carbone, who recorded the game’s final out.

Hatfield starter Bill Keyte matched Greenwood pitch for pitch in the first four innings as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie. The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the first when Justin Davey, who walked and stole second, scored on a Hatfield error.

Hatfield got that run back in the third when Matt Albaugh, who singled and moved up to second on an error, scored on Christian Radick’s single to right. Radick led Hatfield offensively, collecting three of his team’s eight hits.

The Hawks blew the game wide open in the fifth. Mike Antoni drew a leadoff walk, and the Hawks had runners on second and third with none out after Mark Grassie’s sacrifice fly was misplayed. Davey followed with an RBI single, and another run crossed the plate on Alex Bashore’s perfectly-executed suicide squeeze.

Craig Lepre’s single plated Davey, and after Greenwood drew a walk, Steve Dale delivered the big blow of the game – a bases-clearing double down the right field line. He scored on Pat Carbone’s single, and the Hawks led 8-1.

That lead grew to 9-1 in the eighth when Antoni doubled and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Lepre.

In the ninth, Robbie Zinsmeister, who had a pair of hits, started Hatfield’s two-out rally with an infield single, and after Chris Edgar drew a walk, Scott Christy delivered an RBI single up the middle. Albaugh was hit by a pitch, and Radick followed with an RBI single, bringing an end to Greenwood’s day on the mound. An error allowed a third Hatfield run to cross the plate, but Carbone coaxed a grounder to the mound out of the next batter he faced to close out the game.

Nor-Gwyn, which has assured itself a spot in Wednesday’s title game, will face Nazareth in Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. game while Hatfield will take on Boyertown in a must-win loser’s bracket game at 4 p.m.
