Game 3: Sunday, July 19, 2009

HATFIELD 11, NAZARETH 10

Jake Dunn scored on an errant throw to third after Chris Edgar legged out a bunt single in the ninth inning of Sunday’s thrill-a-minute game between Hatfield and Nazareth. Dunn opened the inning with a line single to center, bringing an end to Drew Hercik’s day on the mound. An error on Robbie Zinsmeister’s sacrifice bunt put a pair of runners on board, and that set the stage for Edgar’s bunt.

Nazareth, which led for the better part of nine innings, went on top 6-2 after a three-run outburst in the fourth. A Carl Motts home run in the bottom of the inning made it a 6-3 game, but D.J. King’s RBI single in the fifth gave Nazareth a 7-3 edge.

It was a 7-5 game after Hatfield rightfielder Christian Radick hit a solo homer in the seventh. Nazareth got that run back in the eighth, but Zinsmeister hit a three-run blast over the left field fence to the knot the score 8-8 in the eighth. Hatfield tacked on two more runs to go on top 10-8, but Nazareth’s Dave Smith lofted a two-run home run to right to knot the score in the ninth, setting the stage for the dramatic finish in the bottom of the inning.

Carl Motts notched the win, working five and two thirds innings in relief of starter Matt Albaugh.

Game 4: Sunday, July 19, 2009

NOR-GWYN 3, TAMAQUA 2

Jamey Minnemeyer and Kyle Evans found themselves locked in a classic pitcher’s duel in the nightcap on Sunday, and it was Nor-Gwyn’s Minnemeyer earning the win – allowing just six hits in nine strong innings.

Tamaqua – thanks to an RBI single by Ryan Palsgrove – went on top 2-1 in the top of the ninth, but the Hawks won it in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back wild pitches that plated Craig Lepre and Chris Greenwood who had walked to open the inning.

Earlier, Tamaqua took a 1-0 lead in the first when Chris Pilla, who led off the game with a bad-hop single, scored on Derrek Boyer’s RBI single.

The Hawks knotted the score in the fourth.

Justin Davey opened the inning with a bunt single and – after a delayed steal – wound up on second. He scored on Greenwood’s RBI single. That 1-1 tie remained intact until the ninth.

Evans fanned nine and allowed just seven hits in a standout effort for Tamaqua.
