Pennsbury (11-2-1, 23 points) might not own Prudential Insurance, but the Falcons now own a Piece of the Rock with a 1-1 deadlock with unbeaten Council Rock South (12-0-2, 26 points) in SHSHL action. The game was played at the Face-Off Circle in Warminster on 1/8/10.
“To be honest, this was the best game of the year,” said Rock South head coach Joe Houck. “It was a great game for the fans to watch – hard played and clean.
“Pennsbury is a team with really no standouts,” added Houck. “They play on an even keel, and they played very well against us.”
Pennsbury – which lost its only league game to CR South, 3-1 in the opening game of the season – and the Golden Hawks played to a scoreless tie for the first two periods. Rock South out shot the Falcons 16-12 over the first two periods.
“Pennsbury did a good job of dumping the puck in our end and chasing,” said Houck. “Pennsbury is an excellent team and did a great job of shutting down our number one line - (Patrick Grilli, Peter Malamud, and Tyler Deitrick).”
Pennsbury snared a 1-0 lead with 10:15 left in the third period. Ken McCormick scored an even strength goal on an assist from Matt Mager. It was the 15th goal of the season for McCormick.
Rock South rallied back for the tie with just 3:04 left in regulation. The Golden Hawks scored a power play goal off the stick of Grilli on assists from Malamund and Jonathan Houck. It was the 23rd goal of the season for Grilli.
“I thought we controlled the flow for most of the third period,” said Houck. “We moved the puck well, but I thought that their goaltender played an outstanding game.”
Falcon net minder Corey Chapin came up with a game-high 24 saves, while Hawk goalie Sean Boyd also played well stopping 16 of 17 shots.
“We will move on and try to build on this game,” said Houck. “Us, Pennsbury, and Council Rock North are going to be going hard against each other all year.”
Council Rock North (12-0-1, 25 points) won its first game back from the holiday break with a 6-2 victory over Pennridge (3-8-3, 9). The contest was played at Hatfield Ice on 1/7/10.
The Indians outshot the Rams 16-5 in the first period enroute to a 3-0 lead. The goal scorers for Rock North were Kyle Weitz, Scott Titus, and Alex Trier.
Titus scored his second goal of the game in the second period – on the power play – on assists from both Steven Bullard and Thomas Elmer.
Titus completed his hat trick with a goal in the third period – on a power play. The Indians also scored a third period goal off the stick of Max Freeman.
Rock North goaltender Blake Hutner earned the win for the Indians. Hutner stopped 12 of 14 Pennridge shots on goal.
Neshaminy (3-6-4, 10 points) held off a determined William Tennent (0-9-5, 5) to register a 3-2 SHSHL National Conference win at the Grundy Ice Center on 1/7/10.
William Tennent scored the first goal of the game as Cameron Goodell scored on an assist from Pat Golden. Neshaminy countered with a goal by D.J. Bell to tie the score at 1-1.

Both goaltenders – Connor Williams for Neshaminy and Eric Horrox for the Panthers – recorded shutouts in the third period to preserve the 3-2 Neshaminy victory.

Souderton (9-4-0, 18 points) remained on top of the SHSHL Continental Division standings with a pair of league wins last week. The Indians opened the week with a win over Abington, 5-2, and followed with a 6-4 win over North Penn (3-9-2, 8 points).
“We struggled a little against Abington,” said Souderton head coach Tom Coopersmith. “Right now we have two very solid lines that are anchored by Michael McCarthy and Corre Sommers on one line – and Collin Montgomery and Brian McMullin on the second line.”
McCarthy leads the Big Red in scoring with 16 goals and 15 assists in 13 games. He has scored four power play goals and two short-handed goals.
“Our offense has been pretty good all season,” said Coopersmith. “And our defense is young – but improving.”
The Souderton goaltending has been handled well by Drew Politsky.
Souderton took a 3-1 lead over North Penn in the first period. The Indians made that two-goal advantage stand .up for the remainder of the game.
“We had our chances to come back and win the game,” said North Penn head coach Kevin Vaitis. “Our forwards played well defensively, and I think that we will continue to improve on the defensive end of the ice.”
The goal scorers for Souderton in the first period against the Knights were McMullin, McCarthy, and Sommers. The lone goal scorer for North Penn was Jim McKelvie.
The teams each scored single goals in the second period. Montgomery scored for the Big Red, while Allan Fenton scored a power play goal for the Knights.
Souderton scored a pair of goals in the third period to secure the win. Anthony McPhee scored midway through the period, and McMullin scored on a power play goal late in the period. McKelvie and Fenton scored the North Penn goals.
Central Bucks South (6-5-2, 14 points) kept its hold on second place in the conference standings with a 3-2 victory over Central Bucks East (5-9-1, 11).
CB East took a two-goal lead after the first period on solo scores by Nick Patullo and Tyler McIntosh. The solo Titan goal scored in the period was by Dan Pulse.
South scored single goals in the second and third periods to earn the win. Vince Vona scored in the second stanza, while Pulse scored what proved to be the game winner in the third period.
Both goalies had fine outings. Dennis Ruff had 26 saves for the Titans, while Justin Golia registered 25 saves for the Patriots.
Pennridge (3-8-3, 9 points) and Central Bucks West (1-9-3, 5) played to a 5-5 tie at Hatfield Ice.
The only score of the first period came when Johnny Taylor scored a goal for the Bucks on assists from T.J. Sak and Andrew McNally.
There was a shootout in the second period as six goals were scored – three each by the Rams and West. The goal scorers for PHS were Richard Thorton, Tyler Vanderslice, and Matt Hicks. Scoring a pair of goals for CB West was Nathan Routier, while Matt Wing scored a single goal.

American Division
Upper Moreland (11-3) is not a member of the SHSHL American Division.
The Golden Bears are not permitted to contend for either a SHSHL
American Division title – or a postseason berth in the Class A Flyers Cup tournament – because one of their players does not attend Upper Moreland High School.
But the competition between the Bears and the rest of the SHSHL American Division is very real – on the ice. Evidence of that fact was a 4-3 win by Upper Dublin (6-4-1) over UMHS last week in a game played at the Warwick Ice Arena.
“We don’t look at Upper Moreland any differently than we would any other team we are playing,” said Upper Dublin head coach Chris Seamens. “Bobby Cervone (the ineligible player) is a good kid and a good ice hockey player. We look forward to playing against them. It shows us how good a team we are.”
“The players voted at the beginning of the season to play with Bobby on this team,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ray Burnick. “He is a senior – and we will be able to move back into the league play next season.”
Upper Moreland – if it had been a member of the SHSHL American Conference – would currently have a record of 7-2. The Bears have lost games to both Hatboro-Horsham and Upper Dublin.
Wissahickon (8-4 overall, 5-0 SHSHL) remained unbeaten in the division with a 4-2 victory over Hatboro-Horsham (7-4-1, 3-1-1).
David Ko scored the first and last Trojan goals – the first to give them the lead – the second to clinch the win. Joey Sutkow and David Pataki also scored for Wissahickon.
Keith Eisenberg and Manny Billones scored Hatboro-Horsham goals.
