FLEETWOOD – For Council Rock North, it was mission accomplished.
After falling one step short of an appearance in the state team tournament last fall, the Indians turned in an impressive effort Tuesday in taking the boys’ team title in the PIAA Eastern Regional Championship at Golden Oaks Golf Club.
The Indians shot a four-player total of 304, 14 shots clear of second place Scranton Prep, which shot a 318 and will join Rock North in the team portion of the state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
Brandon Dalinka was the low man for the Indians with a 1-under par 71. District One champion Zach Herr shot 74, while District One girls’ champion Erica Herr carded a 77.
Austin Birky completed the Rock North lineup with an 82 that was especially satisfying. Last year he struggled in the team event, this year he found a measure of redemption.
“I was just happy to make up for last year,” he said. “We were disappointed last year after losing by one. To come here this year and win is definitely a good feeling.”
The Central Bucks East girls brought home a team championship as well. With just four players in their lineup to their opponents’ five, the Patriots carded a 337.
Jordan Glatt led the way for East with a 75, Ashley Cassidy shot 79, Francesca Ruscio, an 89, and Stephanie Yocum, a 94.
“I’ve been waiting for this for four years,” Ruscio said. “We’re all backing each other up. It’s wonderful.”
Scranton Prep shot a 395 to also earn a state tournament trip.
In the individual boys’ competition, Dalinka had the best showing of any SOL player. His 71 was good for a tie for third. Lancaster Catholic senior Bobby Stengal won the individual title with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden death playoff after he and Kyle Deisher of Montgomery School tied in regulation with matching 2-under par 70s.
Herr’s 74 tied him for ninth while Mike Lam and Colby Lederer from Neshaminy both shot 75 to tie for 12th.
“I putted really well today,” Lam said. “I got off to a rough start; I was 5-over par through seven, but things went great from there.”
Zach Pogust from Plymouth Whitemarsh earned one of 26 state tournament slots with a 76. Abington’s Ben Cooley shot 77 and lost out in a 10-man playoff for the last spot. T.J. Summers from Central Bucks West shot 78 to miss the playoff by one shot.
Glatt’s 75 was good for third in the individual girls’ tournament. She finished five shots behind the champion, Stani Schiavone from Bangor. Cassidy’s 79 was good for a tie for eighth. The top 13 finishers qualified for the girls’ state individual tournament.
North Penn’s Melanie Dickens shot an 83 to miss the last playoff spot by one shot.
